Tero hit it on the head. H.264 is good as a final delivery codec; not good for multi-generation editing.
But you also have to figure in your time, your final deliverables, and your audience. Experiment with a short segment and go through your process. You can decide whether the final quality is acceptable to you or not.

Keep in mind the iPad screen has a higher rez than your SD video. If you are viewing full screen on the iPad, that would account for the apparent lower quality as the video is blown up.

I want to ask first – why not Media Encoder for your transcode, skipping the two-step?

Hi there. When you say shortcut I am thinking you are referring to a keyboard shortcut to audio panning, as opposed to creating effect presets. If you want to be able to simply drop quick settings onto a clip, an effect preset is the way to go.

Click on the wrench icon in your timeline. At the top of that list of settings you will find what you are looking for. Then just make the video line(s) taller to see the thumbnails.

Gotta be careful with some of the templates out there. Not that there’s anything wrong with them; I use templates plenty of times. But some of them are built with effects and features that can choke a computer.
I used a template for an open once. I really liked it. Was very happy with the finished work. It was 30 seconds and took overnight to render. About 15 hours. That’s how it is sometimes with some templates.

If I were in your situation right now, the first choice I would make would be to un-install, then re-install CS5. That may take a little time, but also saves a lot of time by eliminating a ton of guesswork.
Then I would test CS5 apps BEFORE adding back in any extra goodies, plug-ins, etc.
Finally I would make absolutely sure any new plug-ins, FX, etc. were compatible with CS5, which is, as I am sure you know, pretty long in the tooth. (Don’t feel bad – I am still running CS4 at home on an old system for SD work still.)
Once I had confirmed compatibility, then I would make ABSOLUTELY sure where the files/plug-ins are supposed to be installed in CS5. If I wasn’t ABSOLUTELY sure, I would seek feedback from the source, and maybe ask about it here too.

PPro is going to generate those PEK files. There is no way to stop it from doing so that I am aware of.
When it is time to archive your project, you can delete them. If you open the project again it will re-generate them as needed.
If the issue is they are devouring space on your system drive, change the location where Cache files are saved in the preferences menu. But the reality is you’ll still need to do some periodic housecleaning on the system to deal with them.

Are you using Firewire to connect the camera to the Mac?

I have found sometimes, in multi-cam shoots for example, that I’ll get this notification when in fact there’s no issue. I think it might be generated by instances where we cut to a reaction shot during an interview where the person still talking is offscreen.
It’s a guess, but it’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😉
