As a Freelancer I am constantly flipping OSX to PC and vice versa. The effects and transitions are really the only things that jump out. Most edits (requiring straight edits or cross dissolves/dip to black or white/audio effects are fine.

Personally I prefer working on the PC. I use a MBP C2D 2.66 4gig ram 320 hdd with bootcamp. OSX since snow leopard feels sluggish compared to win7 64bit. Leopard felt about the same as win7 but current OSX just ain’t as snappy on the same machine as windows 7.

Each to his own. My opinion. Premiere Pro CS5 performs pretty much the same on either. It feels a little heavy on OSX, but that could be the OS itself making me feel working with CS5 is slower.

How fast are your hard drives. Do you have multiple drives setup so media is not on the same drive as the OS? HD will need some form of RAID 0 or 5 at high speeds to run optimally. The ATI card may not be the best for Pr either. I have found the ATI 5770 card in a new Mac Pro tower and FCP 7 crashes on multiclip editing every 20mins.

As mike wrote. Get the prefs set for transition duration. Then ad Ann wrote select all the clips to use the menu “sequence>apply default transition to selection”.

But, make sure you have the track/s active (name has a highlight grey) and if you don’t want audio to have the transitions you can hold the alt key while selecting the video or using the selection arrow.

Sadly premiere pro ain’t do pro in the free run timecode arena. 🙁
If you shot on the P2 media you’d be fine, but tape bass ingest just can’t work with free run timecode. Try 1 of these two things. Use HDVsplit to capture and at least have all your clips as separate clips. I think it’s only on PC. Try to capture in segments and do an old school batch capture. Make sure you have at least 3 sec run up to your in points. HDV timecode is a bit screwy so you might need to manually sync in the timeline.

It is most likely that the dialog is on the right channel. Mono takes the left channel only. Try this tutorial to use the fill right audio effect.

I am not getting hardware acceleration with the laptop. And that’s kinda my point. I am having a great experience cutting and grading 550d 1080 25/24 & 720 50/60 footage with a c2d 2.66 4gig ram and a external FW800 drive. I understand the limitations of such a setup and am happy to work in 1/4 res playback/pause. The 550d is the same data rate as the 5d and the camera has comparable specs for video as the 7d. Have you tried the systems with mercury in software mode? Are you sure you have the hardware mode active? It is possible to have bad ram. Yes, across 3 systems. Very bad luck, but not impossible.
To be perfectly honest I have found my experience of OsX snowleopard to be sluggish when compared to the bootcamp run win7 & cs5. I am looking to get a grunt PC at the moment and save about 1/2 the money.
Apple seem to have dropped the ball in my experiences of late. 🙁
Good luck with your setup. Let us know what the system is like compared with software and hardware mercury engine modes. I am looking at the GTX470 on the PC. That has had some very happy posts related to bang for buck.

Hi guy.
Just because you have bought a Mac pro it doesn’t mean that everything will magically work.
I am working with a brand new Mac pro and fcp 7.0.3 and it’s crashing every 20mins.
Its using the ATI 5770 graphics card and it’s having problems with the apple controlled and developed software. No system is perfect. Sometimes you get bad hardware or installs.
Your experience is not common. I use a MacBook pro with cs5 and have been cutting DSLR at lower res for realtime effects based editing without any problems.
I have a feeling the new mac pro towers are a bit funky.
Add some more specs about your system & setup. Just because it’s an apple computer doesn’t mean it just “works”. We had to send back the latest tower as it was not booting and kept crashing in a loop.
If you want some help or advice then use this space for just that. If you want to spread your bad experience as gospel, you are just further showing that apples aren’t worth the bang for buck. Just my opinion.

Not quite sure why it’s stucking on loop. Maybe clear the preferences by holding down shift + alt during launch.

If you want to move the CTI to the end of the time line tap the end button on the keyboard. Home button will you to the start. 😉

You may need to clear the preferences.

This can be done by holding down the shift and alt key immediately after launching PPro. Hold them down the entire time it takes to launch PPro to the New/Open Project Window.

Hi Eric,

Can you explain why you need standalone files?

Technically there already is a standalone file of each take in one of the folders. You will lose timecode and such but the video with audio file is there. From memory it’s an mp4 file.
