When unexplained things start happening with FCP run the standard Trash pref procedure and repair disk premissions and restart.

You can key out the sky using the color key filter- video filters/key/color key, it may or may not work well depending ont he footage and colors in it. Use this filter in conjunction with a garbage matte to remove the bulk of material and color key the detail area.

First this whole thing would be better achived in After Effects. But since that is probally not an option- my thoughts. If you exported each layer as its own movie you could easiy keyframe the opacity for each layer movie FOR 100-0. mabey I’m confused by what you want to do (Q2) but why cant you click drag around everything you want to position?

The tape can be interlaced or progressive- depends on the setting in camera during aquisition.
If your doing an offline why would your want to capture your dv material in 10bit.
I guess if you have the disk space it would save a re-dig step in the end.

Pal is not in my background, but magicbullet and Gfilm effects are two nice plugin sets for film effects. I use Gfilm in moderation- they have lots of presets to get the look on the right track but definatly customize them your self.

Try another erase and install. I had to do it 3 times before everything worked properly. I don’t really understand why an install would work the third time and not the first two but It did. I too felt your frustration of leaving a rock solid 4.5 to pay money for an upgrade that dosnt work. All that said, my fcp5.04 system is allmost as solid as 4.5- it just still drops frames all over the place-

Google an app called Handbrake. In my opinion the best of the free apps and it creates as good a QT file as can be expected.
