I have better luck with single pass constant bit rate, if the video is not too difficult. Single pass variable bit rate can work too, but you will have to check your entire project carefully, vbr can cause some weird errors.

On most occasions that I have tried 2 pass vbr in a software encoder I have had hit and miss results.
Have received some encodes back that can look pretty blocky.

Truthfully, the only time I’ve trusted 2 pass vbr is with the top dollar hardware encoding systems where the tape source is analyzed and then captured on the second pass like the old DVD Maestro. But that is an expensive and outdated option now.

February 23, 2010 at 6:12 am in reply to: What printer works with Verbatim Dual Layer Thermal?

I have had the Primera version of these small Thermal printers for some time. Mine has worked and is still working. However, there are no drivers for Windows Vista or Windows 7 anywhere to be found.
XP only. When my XP computer blew up at home I took the printer to work where I still use it. You have to make sure that you use the blank media for Thermal only…not inkjet. They need to have the very slick shiny surface. It uses single color ribbons that run about $20 to replace.

Thanks for the help. I wasn’t able to get the SDI to work, even though the digital drivers were installed and selectable for some reason. But the component with analog audio worked fine. Drivers and firmware seemed to be up to date. Anyway, got through the project. Thanks again.

Thanks Shane, great tutorial. I have used Log and Transfer before for AVCHD, works great.
Now my main question is which device would I be likely to find as a rental that would go into an
iMac through either fw or usb?

If you know what you are doing you can try editing the compressor setting itself in TextEdit, it’s not that difficult. Find the settings in /library/application support/compressor/

Would like to do this, but the files were not here as shown. I do have FC Studio 3, maybe they moved them? Sounded like a great theory though.

Problem resolved. Had something to do with cropping. I have the cropping jumping all over the place in quick edits. Just made a minor change to the effect and it all seems ok now. Thanks for the help.

    Bit of an update here.
Went to add some text on top of this same area…and the renders within FCP result in the same as exporting…a clip has vanished.
I noticed when playing the clip in real time, it looks fine, but when scrubbing the timeline, it is gone.
Seems like it needs to render, except, the magic little color lines tell me it does not need to.

It is part of the large clip.

The clip is enabled. It appears fine when playing the timeline both in the computer monitor and on an NTSC monitor. Problem occurs only when exporting.

August 5, 2009 at 7:29 am in reply to: Mojo Analog not working with MC 3.5.1

I feel your pain regarding the mojo. Ours has been hit and miss for some time now, and for the last few months simply doesn’t work. Even with a different mojo we get the same result, and we are no where near MC 3.5 yet. (MC 2.8.1) And the general response I get from reseller tech support is to ship the whole system, wipe the hard drive and be willing to pay for however many hours it might take to fix it. And since I believe it’s an inherent combination of software and hardware issues, I don’t have much faith it can be diagnosed, therefore, spending lots of money and still having the same problem is the most likely result. Anyway, sorry about the little rant there. Maybe this can help.

The only thing you didn’t mention on your list was trying a different FW cable. And use a higher quality wire as well. FW cables are such fragile things.

Do you have access to another mojo you can try?

    Good luck..
