I remember using the EMC NLE. They were on 486’s. We had their roll out off line model and used it for many years to cut lists. But they came out after Avids I believe.

What makes you think Apple has abandoned professional users?
Right now I think the competition between Avid and Apple is healthy. I use both systems on a regular basis and each have their own pluses and minuses.

I believe the codecs have been updated. Although there is one last thing to check on for that today.

The older tower computer will not run 5.5, it is at it’s upgrade limit without changing out the computer.

    Thanks.
The more info about AVCHD I get the more realization that it won’t bode well for keying.
This will probably insure that we go with Nanoflash or KiPro.
In our old Meridian Avid we do have Ultimatte for the chroma keys and it did a pretty good
    job (still works too).

Even though the transcoded files are in what appears to be the proper location within Avid Mediafiles/MXF/1, I can’t get them to come up…so…When I did the transcode I only selected MASTER CLIPS.
However this project is complex and has many precomputes, effects, mixdowns, subclips etc.., so I’m going to retranscode overnight and select MASTER CLIPS, PRECOMPUTES and MEDIA FILES. See if that makes it work, although I’m not feeling like it will make the difference.

I need to convert because of the total number of files involved, well over 10,000. Anything over 5,000 impedes performance in the old omf file structure.

Have trashed the database files twice and rebooted/relaunched but they are still showing offline.
For the moment I’m stuck, feel like I’m doing it correctly but don’t understand why it’s not happening.
Next stop is a call to Tewksbury for some help, I guess.

    Thanks for the responses!

Should have mentioned the price of $7,600 as well.

August 4, 2010 at 8:31 pm in reply to: a simple compressor question

I can’t corroborate the “suckiness” of compressor. Have not used it much but so far it has been OK, not particularly great but acceptable.

If you’ve got time to thoroughly check your encodes I would try a one pass vbr with a peak of 7.0 and maybe a low as 5.0 or less. You have a lot of video to crunch and I don’t know what your menu or extras will include. Calculate your space needs based on the peak number. You may have to try multiple encodes. This is assuming that you will be working with compressor.

If exploring another compression program is within budget, there are some better ones.
Haven’t tried bitvice myself. On the PC side I use Grass Valley’s Canopus Pro Coder 3. The mastering settings put out a beautiful file but it is pretty slow.
I still know some people who swear by Media Cleaner.

    Good luck.

    Thanks everyone.
You know it’s kinda crazy, all these little interface areas we click on, push or slide seem to have “names”. Perhaps after using my system for a year I should learn them.
Speeding through the book now and testing next week.
