That’s very odd. Have you tried plugging the drive in before you turn the Mac on. Sometimes my eSATA drives don’t get recognized when I plug them in after the Mac is running even though this should work.

Also, how is the disk formatted? Is it HFS+ (which should always be recognized) or perhaps NTFS and you had NTFS drivers installed on Lion that aren’t on Snow Leopard? Just trying to guess what might be wrong.

June 16, 2018 at 1:00 am in reply to: What codec is used in MP4?

[Patrick Cooper] “Would anyone know what codec is used in Sony Movie Studio’s MP4 files? It does say ‘Main Concept AVC / AAC’ in the heading in the export panel – would that give a clue? “

MP4 files use the MPEG4 Codec. It has AVC video with AAC audio.

[Patrick Cooper] “So I don’t know if they’re being compressed in some harmful way before they make their way over to Shotcut. “

Yes they are. MPEG4 uses very high compression and I would not use it for delivery to a stock video house.

[Patrick Cooper] “Don’t know if it’s better to import the original camera files directly into Shotcut and do the trimming and colour grading there but I’m more used to using Sony Movie Studio (even though their contrast and colour correction tools are rather crude.)”

You would absolutely produce better results by avoiding the extra MPEG4 compression and edit the files in Shotcut. I’m guessing that agency you are sending them to assumes that you are shooting Apple ProRes and maintaining that quality throughout your processing (which you are not). By rendering to MPEG4 you are degrading the footage and it should be avoided.

You may also get called out for using Shotcut because it does not have a license Apple ProRes codec and the ProRes files that it creates are a hack that don’t perform well on a Mac. In short, the files are “illegal” and the agencies might not appreciate that if their customers start complaining that they were sold files that didn’t use a licensed Apple ProRes codec (I know I would).

I agree with Bill. You have your files in the Windows Temp folder and they probably got deleted because of that. The Temp folder is for temporary files that can be deleted at any time.

You should have your working files under your Documents folder or on a separate Video drive.

[Hal Beery] “Which programs have you found to be solid/trustworthy for OS SIERRA???”

I use Carbon Copy Cloner. They keep it up to date with the latest macOS and it’s been working great for years. It even copies the hidden recovery partition. I’ve restored from it several times over the years and I’ve never had a problem.

[Mathieu Ghekiere] “The whole Metal/Open CL/GL thing is also a bit ‘scary’. Because it heightens Apple’s walled garden and I don’t know yet if that will give Metal a push, or will have the opposite effect on 3rd party developers.”

Well… actually Metal is cross-platform! It just depends on what “platforms” you are talking about… ????

It seems odd to us because we are looking at it from the Desktop platform perspective where the 3 desktop platforms are macOS, Windows, and Linux, but Apple is looking across macOS, iOS, and tvOS platforms because they also just announce the ability to run iOS apps on the Mac. Let’s stop to think about that for a moment… there are MILLIONS of iOS apps and Apple just made it infinitely easier to offer them on macOS using the same Metal API and programming language (Swift). Now it gets more interesting.

Also remember that GPU’s are not only being used for Graphics anymore. They are now being used for Neural Network training because of the massive parallelism that they possess. The next wave of AI based applications probably needed an API that was more adept at these new workloads than OpenCL/GL could offer. That doesn’t mean that OpenCL/GL will stop working. It just means that there is an alternative API that gives greater control over the hardware for workloads that require it.

June 8, 2018 at 12:15 pm in reply to: Raid-0 funny business

What Jared Is pointing out is really important. Why did you create a RAID? If it was to protect your data and get redundancy you failed. RAID 0 actually makes your data less secure because if anyone drive fails you will lose all the data on all three drives.

If you were expecting data redundancy you should’ve created a RAID 1 and that would’ve been the size of a single drive and your data would be stored on both drives so that it one drive fails you still have your data on the other Drive. It sounds like that’s what you were expecting but not what you got.

With 3 drives you could also create a RAID 5 to get more space and still have redundancy. So it’s important understand why you created the RAID in the first place to make sure you got what you think you got.

June 3, 2018 at 1:31 pm in reply to: Vegas can’t see gh5s clips

[Mike Kujbida] “Some formats it shoots will open correctly in VP13/14 but 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 AVC files weren’t supported until VP15.”

[Sandra MarszaÅ‚ek] “But those are normal FHD clips not 4K :/”

Yes but you are still shooting 4:2:2 AVC so maybe that is enough to make it not work? Look at the specs that you gave us in your original post:

    Slow motion: (works)
    Format profile: High@L5

    Normal speed: (doesn’t work)
    Format profile: 4:2:2@L4.2

You are shooting 4:2:2@L4.2 profile so as Mike suggests this might be a case of using 2016 software with a 2018 camera. You can’t expect old software like Vegas Pro 13 to always work with new cameras.

This is easy enough to figure out… I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 15 and and if it works with these files then you’ve found your solution (upgrade your software).

June 3, 2018 at 1:01 pm in reply to: Vegas 5.0 Tracks

[Francois Pénzes] “Did that a while back for a picky client and it past muster.”

OMG that’s totally ridiculous. What was the client expecting? lol

I would use one microphone and simply let Vegas render the output to both tracks. If the client says anything, I would seriously ask them what did they expect to hear that would be different on each track coming from the same mouth?

Sometimes you have to challenge the client’s ignorance. I’m guessing they would never know the difference. All they care is that the audio file is in stereo and that each channel has a waveform.

June 3, 2018 at 12:42 pm in reply to: Video is not the same after rendering

[William Edeving] “However, after rendering the video all the pictures was misplaced. Does anyone know how to fix this?”

What was your preview Window quality set to while editing? I’m guessing that it was set to the default preview setting Preview (Auto).

Unfortunately, editing is not very accurate at the Preview(Auto) setting and rendering always uses the Best (Full) setting so if you are doing very exact placement with motion tracking, you need to edit with Best (Full) as well.

Change the preview to Best (Full) and playback the timeline. You should see the same problems as the rendered video. If so, you need to redo the motion tracking using Best (Full) setting.

[Tom Keady] “I’ve been told (by the people I work for) that even my voice overs have to be in stereo (both channels)”

Have you told them that you only have one mouth? ????

[Tom Keady] “why doesn’t my Vegas record in stereo??”

Are you using two microphones? Of course not, because you only have one mouth. Your recordings are not in stereo because you are only using one mono microphone which is exactly what you should be using. Vegas is seeing one input from one microphone. Just switch the event to mono and Vegas will play it out of both speakers.

If the people you work for want the voice over in stereo, then make the event mono and render it in stereo and Vegas will happily copy the one mono track to both stereo channels.

There is no reason to record it in stereo and, as you have seen, Vegas will not record it in stereo unless you use a stereo microphone or two mono microphones.
