You know… I should have looked at the picture you linked to before I made that last post.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and once I looked at it the problem was obvious. You are not using File | Render As…. You are using Render to New Track!!! That will only show you render options for file types that Vegas can edit.
Goto to: File | Render As… and you should see the same options that I have posted.

I would completely uninstall both Vegas Pro 8.0 and DVD Architect 5.0 and re-install them. If that doesn’t fix it, contact Sony Tech Support. Something is wrong that these renderers are not being installed.

Yea could be. Since DVD Architect comes with Vegas Pro 8.0c I just assume that people install it. I know you don’t get Dolby AC3 unless you install DVD Architect. So I think you’re on to something.

There is no “Vegas 9”. There is Vegas Pro 8.0 and Vegas Movie Studio 9. I’ll assume that you have Vegas Movie Studio which doesn’t support Velocity Envelopes. You need the Vegas Pro version for that.
It is very confusing that Sony chose to have one help file for both versions of Vegas. You need to watch the icons in the help file to see which features are applicable to your version (common mistake).

This is really strange. If you had Vegas Pro I’d say look at the scopes and see what the real video’s range is but the Movie Studio version of Vegas doesn’t have scopes.
Since you get the same washed out look on other computers it doesn’t look like it’s your laptop. That points to the camera itself. I would connect the camera directly to your TV and view the footage and see how it looks. If it still looks dark, maybe the camera is defective?

If your source isn’t widescreen and you render widescreen you will get black bars on the left and right sides. If you then view this widescreen footage on a TV that isn’t widescreen you will get black bars on the top and bottom. The result of doing both of these is black bars on the top, bottom, left, and right, which is probably the black border that you are experiencing. This is normal when you render to widescreen and don’t have a widescreen source or output device.
I’m not sure what you were expecting but it sounds like you got exactly what you asked it to do.

I’m not sure if this works in Movie Studio Platinum but in Vegas Pro you can right-click on an event and select Properties and then go to the General tab and it will tell you what media plug-in its using for that event’s media.

It may just be using a codec that Vegas doesn’t support. You will need to use a conversion program to re-encode it into a more editor friendly format. Something like Super(c) should do the trick.
It looks like that Pinnacle device can capture MPEG-2. For the future, why don’t you just use that format since Vegas has no problems with MPEG-2 files.

You should see Sony AVC (*.mp4, *.m2ts, *.avc) right under Scott Studios Wave and before Sony MXF. If not I would re-install Vegas Pro 8.0. This is where you get all of the AVCHD Blu-ray templates from.
