    > It still says .wmv, but I didn’t pay much attention to that because I apparently rerendered them to AVI, right? And because it doesn’t change the name it would still be known as .wmv, correct?

No. They should NOT say .wmv… they should say .avi. This is your problem. Remember the settings I said to use earlier in this thread?

    1. Output Container: avi
    2. Output Video Codec: M-JPEG
    3. Output Audio Codec: WAV-(pcm 16 little-endian)

    [x] MEncoder

    Video: (no change)
    Aspect: 4:3
    Frame/Sec: 29.976

    Audio: (no checks)
    Sample Freq: 48000
    Channels: 2

The files will have a .avi extension. If they don’t you’re doing something wrong. Then replace all of the .wmv files with .avi files. There should be no .wmv files anywhere in your project. I know it’s frustrating but try again.

Not so easy with Vegas alone unless the sounds can be EQ’d out but iZotope RX may be able to help.

That’s great! This was a good example of when to use Pan/Crop and when to use Track Motion because while on the surface they seem to accomplish the same thing, the difference is very subtle. Glad I could help.

If you are rendering to transfer to your camcorder then you must use the format that your camcorder records in. For HD that would be either HDV or AVCHD depending on your camcorder.

It is possible that the project is corrupt in some way because normally generated media renders fine. If you were doing everything with AVI’s, I am confused by this line in the dump:

    > 0450F0EC: 6FFED3E2 6FFC0000 + 2D3E2 (wmvdecod.dll)

That says that the WMV decoder is being used. Why would that be if there is no longer and WMV media in your project? Could it be that there is a small sliver of WMV file hiding behind a generated media event on the timeline? I don’t know. You really need a Sony Tech to read these dumps (maybe it was just in memory from something else you were doing?)

At this point I would contact Sony tech support. You’ve tried everything imaginable. Maybe they can look at your project file and tell you what’s going on? I just don’t know what else to try.

I would use the Sony AVC encoder in Vegas. It makes great quality mpeg-4 files at low bitrates. The MainConcept AVC encoder is great too. One of these should to the job nicely.

October 24, 2008 at 11:16 am in reply to: Vista 64 Bit versions

Wow, we’re all over the board here because I’m going to recommend Vista Home Premium 64 and here’s why:

Basic is too basic it doesn’t have the media center or file sharing or the new Aero GUI or anything like that.

Business has limited multi-media capability (no media center, etc.) because it is meant for office use, not home entertainment.

Ultimate is, IMHO, a rip off because it’s almost twice as expensive as Premium and all it gives you hard drive encryption that doesn’t even work on 98% of computers (you need a special chip to take advantage of it) and it has some “unnamed” extras which turn out to be more themes and junk you don’t need. It also allows up to 128GB of memory.

For my money, Premium is the sweet spot at $99. It has everything Ultimate has except for the two unimportant items I mentioned above. The only “real” difference between Premium and Ultimate is that Premium maxes out at 16GB of memory instead of Ultimate’s 128GB. Since my motherboard maxes out at 8GB, Premium was the obvious choice for me.

I agree with Jeremy, look at the comparison chart on Microsoft’s web site and I think you will come to the same conclusion that I did.

For the record, I think it absolutely “stinks” that Vista32 and Vista64 aren’t delivered together at one price on the same install media. The fact that you can’t even upgrade from one to the other is mind boggling. Microsoft must really not want Vista 64 to succeed because they make it very painful to get it.

A word of caution: Make sure there are 64-bit drivers for all of your hardware. I cannot use my Vista 64 partition because there are no drivers for both my M-Audio FW-410 and Presonus FireStudio audio interfaces which means no audio for me. 🙁 A friend of mine has the same problem with their Alesis Multimix 8. Vista 64 is just not well supported at this time.

Try this: You Pan/Crop to crop B down to just the part you want to see but use Track Motion to resize it and position it as a picture-in-picture. This should allow you to add the border and have it work properly.

October 24, 2008 at 10:41 am in reply to: Rendering 2 hour video to DVD….understanding bitrates

    > Since John only mentioned changing one bitrate, I assumed that he was talking about the option with one bitrate and that’s what I’m trying now.

Sorry for not being more clear. I was talking about the Average bitrate.

The Average bitrate is what’s important to file size. It determines what the overall average for the entire file will be. The Maximum bitrate says that you can go up to that if you need it but you must steal from other frames later to maintain the average. The Minimum bitrate is just a floor to not go below.

When you start dealing with lower bitrates you can sometimes get better quality by using the 2-pass option. this takes twice as long to render because it makes one pass to determine the bitrate it needs for each frame, then it plans where it wants to use the bits that it has available based on the need and makes a 2nd pass to do execute the plan and do the actual encoding. This way you get maximum utilization from your “bit budget”.

  • > How did you come to the conclusion to lower the bitrate to KBps?

I used the bitrate calculator in Ultimate S Pro but there are plenty of free bitrate calculators on the internet if you do a search. It’s pretty straight math involving the resolution and frames per second.
