That script is from the Sony Script SDK. Just download the Script SDK for Vegas Pro 8.0 from the Sony site and you’ll have the latest version.

Yup, Vegas does not support DivX or Xvid. You need to use some other program like Super(c) to convert it to a format that Vegas can edit.

If I drag and drop an HD file on the timeline (either HDV or AVCHD) Vegas complains that it’s an unsupported format.

That is a memory access error while trying to write to memory. It could be a faulty RAM chip or just a bug in Vegas. Here is a pretty good article that gives some things that you can try:
The easiest thing to do is check your RAM with a memory test program. If that doesn’t yield anything I would contact Sony tech support first and ship them the project with just that one image and see if they can recreate it.

Did you open Vegas Pro 8.0c in the mean time? I have noticed that after a reboot, if I open 8.1 it can’t read any of my HDV media. If I open 8.0c first then 8.1, it can read them just fine.

How big are the PNG’s? For 720×576 video they don’t need to be any bigger than 720×576 unless you are zooming into them in which you can double that resolution. Extremely large stills will cause problems.

What codec do the files use? Vegas Pro 8.1 can only use 64-bit 3rd party codecs so if you only have the 32-bit version of the codec, it would explain why it plays in 8.0c and not 8.1.

Which means you have AVI files using the MPEG 1 codec? That’s very strange. MPEG 1 files usually have an .MPG extension (in an MPEG wrapper). Try renaming the file from .AVI to .MPG and see if Vegas plays it.

What codec does the AVI file use? Check the event properties in Vegas to see (right-click Properties | Media | Format on both the video and adudio) or use GSpot.
