> Ive used sony vegas for a while, but always using an SD camcorder. … After setting my preferences in the camera (to HDV30), i go ahead and shoot some footage, and then use Vegas to capture my footage as i always do.
You don’t capture HD footage the same way as SD footage so perhaps this is the problem. There are two capture utilities, one for HD and one for DV. If you are using the DV capture this may be why your getting SD footage. Use the HDV capture utility in Vegas and make sure the Canon is set to output HDV over firewire and not DV downconvert (which it sounds like what you’re getting).

> Is Pro 9 worth the jump? Enough added features and improvements?
Download the trial and use it for 30-day and see if you don’t think the new features are indispensable. Only you can answer this question.
I can tell you that besides the obvious big new features for HDV, AVCHD, & XDCAM EX users, there are lots of little features in 8 and 9 that improve my productivity and so it’s worth it for me. (the improved preview speed, instant audio envelopes, and match generated media to event size options are just three small new features in 9 that will save me time) So it all depends on your workflow which is why I say, download the trial and see for yourself.

> I’m looking at my Sony AVC template and I see AVC and Memory Stick. I assume you’d use AVC…
Yes, Sony AVC would be my first choice for internet video.
> Also, I assume you’d go half size, just so it doesn’t interpolate pixels quite so much.
That, and the fact that we don’t want to change the aspect and make the characters look taller or fatter than they are. It makes so sense to confine internet video to a TV standard. It’s not a TV.
> I’ve been rendering my 1080i footage to 720p for video delivery via YouTube and Vimeo. What settings would you use to take 1080i (1440 x 1080) to deliver to YouTube? Would you recommend 960 x 540? I haven’t tried full 1080 yet. Just curious…
I haven’t uploaded any footage to YouTube or Vimeo so I’m not the person to ask. They both accept 720p so that’s what I would use as well. 1080i and 720p are both 16:9 so there should be no problems with resizing. It doesn’t have to be “half”, it just needs to be an even multiple.

You’re welcome. You would need something like Boris Graffiti or After Effects to do what you want.

> With this script, it doesn’t make any difference if the clip is in Project Media or on the timeline as it adds source timecode.
This is a really important point to understand. If you add the Sony Timecode FX to the media, it will show the media’s timecode which you may or may not want to display depending on how many clips you are placing on the timeline and if the timecode is unique and the customer can identify the clips to tell you which timecode from what clip.
If, however, you just want a continuous running timecode that both you and the customer can use as a reference to talk about shots, then you might want to add the timecode to the track or if you have multiple tracks, add it to the Master Video Bus. This will give you continuous timecode regardless of media.
It is important to understand how adding the FX to these different places will produce different output so that you get the desired results.

Yup, I made that one just for you (the pixels were still wet when I uploaded it) 😉
Unfortunately, there is no way to keyframe the path. You can keyframe the text position on the path but not the path itself. That means the text would have to move along the path in order to bend. (not what you want… i know).

> Could anyone please test loading this file?
Yup, and it loads fine into Vegas Pro 9.0. Curiously, it won’t load into Windows Media Player (causes a hard crash)! After Effects CS4 said it was an unsupported format or corrupt file. Premiere Pro CS4 said the file had “an unsupported Audio rate in file” and it would not import it.
So it looks like you need Vegas Pro 9.0 because it’s the only NLE that can work with these files. (played back just fine) 😉

If by “tilt” you are talking about a 2D “bend” where one end is straight and the other bends down then this can be easily accomplished in the ProTye Titler by creating text on a path and bending the path. You do this by using the Path option on the Layout tab in ProType Titler. Double-clicking on the path will create a new point to manipulate. The default path has two points, you will need a third at the point where it transitions from straight to bend so it looks something like this:
If you need more help, click the ? icon in the Protype Titler and this will bring up the help. Then navigate to ProType Titler Tips and techniques and then Placing Text Along a Curve.

As a general rule I like to work in the format of the footage. Open the project properties and press the folder icon all the way on the right labeled “Match Media Settings” when you hover your mouse over it. Then navigate to a piece of FRAPS footage so it can match it. This should set you project properties to match 1680 x 1050 @ 50 fps. I would also right-click on every video event, open the properties and select Disable Resample. This will keep Vegas from blending frames together which will look horrible for animation. Then do all of your editing.
Next you have to think about how you want to render it. That resolution is quite large so you might want to reduce it at least in half to 840 x 525 @ 25 fps (you don’t need 50 fps). I would use the Sony AVC codec because it can make high quality MP4 files at low bitrates. Then start with 1MBps and test a section to see how it looks. Adjust your bitrate up or down to trade-off between quality and file size. When you’re happy with the quality, render the whole thing as MP4.

May 21, 2009 at 9:29 pm in reply to: Highlight Only One Football Player On A Video Clip> what do I do when it moves to the point where the edge of the affect is now in the frame?
Keyframe the center of the oval to reposition it in the Generated Media tool, not the whole frame. This is just like you would keyframe the cookie cutter.(sorry, I forgot to mention that)
