Make sure that Vegas is interpreting the files correctly. Right-click on one of the events and select Properties. Then go to the Media tab and make sure the Pixel aspect ratio is 1.45568 (PAL DV Widescreen).

It sounds like the wavy lines are interlace lines and MPEG1 went out in the 90’s. (ok… maybe early 2K… ;-)) Which handycam? What are your Vegas project settings? and forget about MPEG1. What is you target display medium? DVD? TV? Web? Media Server? Let’s find a modern format for you to render to.

That’s why I render to MPEG2 in Vegas. I never let DVD Architect do the renders.

I think you’re on the right track with tapeless and MPEG-2 but I don’t know what a MOD file is or how much trouble it’s going to give you. I would steer clear of any proprietary format or any format that needs special conversion software and get a camera that shoots good ‘ole MPG files that you can drag and drop right into Vegas Movie Studio. My Sony HDR-CX12 shoots regular MPEG2 files (as well as AVCHD) and it’s great for when my son is just playing around because MPEG is so light-weight with respect to computer power needed to edit it.

What is the audio format of the file? What brand of audio interface do you have on your computer? Have you tweaked the buffer settings in the Vegas Audio properties tab? If you did, perhaps you made them too small. Distortion after a short playback can be caused by audio buffer overflows. Making the audio buffer larger usually fixes the problem as the expense of increased audio latency.

Yes, Dolby Digital AC-3 is exactly what you should be using for DVD and Blu-ray.

Yes, indeed. AC-3 is highly compressed. I’m not sure why you though it would be uncompressed. WAV files are uncompressed. AC-3 is a codec, and codecs compress and decompress. 😉

I would say it’s time to buy an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) with a good built-in serge protector. I’ve got an APC brand unit that has saved me countless times during summer storms (we get a lot of blackouts and surges). I wouldn’t edit without it.

It sounds like you did everything correctly. Does Windows Media Player support Dolby Digital AC-3 5.1 Surround? (i don’t know) Is your default windows audio device set to 5.1 surround? If not, WMP might be downsampling to stereo on the fly. Try other players that support 5.1 as well.

Set your project audio for 5.1 Surround. Then drop the audio files into the project and double-click on the surround pan in the track header to bring up the big Surround Panner window and enable the speakers you want the track to play through.
