In Vegas Movie Studio you want to select Options | Preferences | Preview Device. Then under Device: select Windows Secondary Display. This will allow you to use your entire second screen as a preview device.

To enable this, keep the preview window on your primary display. At the top of the preview, the second icon from the left looks like a monitor. If you hover your mouse over it you will see a context popup that says Preview on External Monitor (Alt+Shift+4). Press this and the secondary monitor will give you a full screen preview. The quality is controlled by the quality setting on the preview window. Press this button again to turn it off.

Open the file in the Quicktime player and go to the Movie Instector window (Ctrl+I) to see what video codec it uses. Then try and get that codec for Windows (if you can). Otherwise you need to go back and ask for the file using a PC compatible codec.

MPEG4 is probably the smallest filesize with the highest quality. You can use the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC render types to do this. The MainConcept AVC type has an Apple iPod 640×480 template that is probably a good starting point for SD. Sony AVC has a lot of HD templates too.

  • Vegas is not splitting the file… your hard drive is. It sounds like you are rendering to a hard drive which is formatted for FAT32 that has a 4GB filesize limit. You need to render to an NTSF formatted drive or convert that drive to NTFS.

There is no way to make a mass change like this. You’ll have to change them one at a time.

June 19, 2009 at 4:39 pm in reply to: sony vegas pro 9 slow preview

As HD projects get larger they do get a bit slower because they use more memory. I would avoid installing any “cocec packs” like the plague. This could cause applications to respond slowly because you may have replaced a very efficient codec with a very inefficient one. I assume it was slow before you did this so it’s probably not the problem.

You didn’t say what version of Vegas or what OS you are using. If you have very large HD projects you should be using Vista 64 and Vegas Pro 9.0 64-bit. This will make good use of all of your memory.

June 19, 2009 at 4:33 pm in reply to: Moving pixels on still image (on youtube)

It’s the encoder using more pixels to represent the still image over time. There is no way to stop this at low bit-rates; it’s just the nature of a low-bitrate encode.

Digieffects Damage will do exactly what you want but you need After Effects or Boris RED as a host. It does not plug directly into Vegas (it’s an AE plug-in). You might be able to fake something like it with the Pixelate and Sepia FX (make the Sepia a bright green) for just a few frames at a time.

June 18, 2009 at 7:36 pm in reply to: Photo Resize

    > Why on earth does Vegas resizes my photo is baffling to me. Can you imagine placing an 11X17 photo in a 5×7 artwork in photoshop and photoshop automatically sizes it.

Can you imagine dropping 300 5-megapixel images on an NLE timeline and having to resize each and every one of them to fit the frame? Outrageous… but that’s what every other NLE *except* Vegas expects you to do. What a waste of time in those other NLE’s.

Actually this is one of the reasons I use Vegas instead of other NLE’s. It automatically conforms everything to the project properties. I can drop HD, SD, Images all into the same project and it all conforms nicely without me having to list a finger. I hate when After Effects forces me to resize images to make them fit the frame. I guess I’m just spoiled by Vegas. 😉

All you have to do is go into Pan/Crop and change the width to match the width of your project in square pixels and the image will be shown it’s actual size. Then you can pan around at it’s full resolution.

I spoke with Mannie today and Spot is doing well. They will be moving him from the hospital to a physical therapy facility soon. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family for a speedy recovery.
