Photo Resize
Posted by Joe Bodego on June 18, 2009 at 2:53 pmI have a problem in vegas that’s driving me crazy. The final size for my video is 480X272 and my photo is 2021x1842x24. I want to use this photo to pan. However when I place the photo in vegas it automatically resize my photo to the project size (480X272). Now I can;t pan the photo unless I manually type in the size. Is there a way like premier or most video editing software where the photo does not resize?

June 18, 2009 at 5:09 pmJoe, this is the way Vegas has always handled stills and I personally prefer it.
There’s no need to enter the numbers manually unless you reall want to.
After opening the Pan/Crop window, move your cursor to any of the 4 corners and drag the image to the new desired size/position.
This will automatically create a keyframe at this spot.
Move the cursor to the next spot on the timeline and adjust the size/position as desired.
Once again, a new keyframe is created.
Repeat as desired, exit Pan/Crop and check your work. -

June 18, 2009 at 5:28 pmThanks for your response but this is more an exercise on how to use the pan tool and I know that. The issue is that I want the still image that I am going to pan to be much bigger that it appears in vegas when I place it on the timeline. I use After Effects also and the image appears at it’s original size when it’s placed. Why on earth does Vegas resizes my photo is baffling to me. Can you imagine placing an 11X17 photo in a 5×7 artwork in photoshop and photoshop automatically sizes it. That’s what I am up against in Vegas. HELP!!

June 18, 2009 at 7:08 pmJoe, you need to get your head wrapped around the way Vegas does things and learn to work with it 🙂
I do a lot of slide shows, deal with this issue constantly and never even think about it.
Unfortunately for you, there’s no way to get Vegas to default to what you want it to do so you’ll have to continue entering your numbers manually.
Sorry 🙁 -

Can you imagine dropping 300 5-megapixel images on an NLE timeline and having to resize each and every one of them to fit the frame? Outrageous… but that’s what every other NLE *except* Vegas expects you to do. What a waste of time in those other NLE’s.
Actually this is one of the reasons I use Vegas instead of other NLE’s. It automatically conforms everything to the project properties. I can drop HD, SD, Images all into the same project and it all conforms nicely without me having to list a finger. I hate when After Effects forces me to resize images to make them fit the frame. I guess I’m just spoiled by Vegas. 😉
All you have to do is go into Pan/Crop and change the width to match the width of your project in square pixels and the image will be shown it’s actual size. Then you can pan around at it’s full resolution.

John, that makes two of us 🙂
I used to use a dpsVelocity and the realtime feature is the ONLY thing I miss about it.
Decent audio capabilities and things like Pan&Scan were afterthoughts in the version I was using.
They may have been updated in later versions but not in what I was using. -

June 19, 2009 at 1:35 amVegas 9 has a new option under Prefs>Editing that will affect what happens with photos. “Automatically crop still images added to timeline” actually seems to work backwards for me, cropping images when I UNcheck the box. Or maybe I just don’t understand it.
Anyway, I’ve always kept an icon for the matchaspect script on my toolbar to use for photos I want to pan. You can always just run the script manually if you don’t do a lot of this. Or set it manually as described by Mike.

June 19, 2009 at 1:47 amDon;t get me wrong guys, I love Vegas, I’ve pretty much had it with After Effects and Premier so I am a fan but I had to do a project and it baffled me that I had no control off the bat with my sizes. I would have to manually do the size myself, just thought I was missing something, thanks a million all you guys

September 24, 2009 at 6:18 amactually guys, can i ask a question about stills in Vegas as well – but its the use of several stills at once…i am using multiple stills in the project and i want to crop three of four stills so they all appear at once on the screen…so one maybe top left, one top right etc.. (like the start of a ‘Brady Bunch’ epsiode??)
but when i crop the pics it always crops to the centre of the screen…is there any way i can (as a slide show) be flashing up multiple stills around different parts of the screen?
any ideas??
thankspaul

September 25, 2009 at 3:36 amYou really should have asked this question in your own thread, as not too many will see it in this old one. But anyway the answer is simple.
Instead of trying to use pan/crop, you want Track Motion. yes, each still will have to be on a separate track.
Alternatively, you can prepare your multiscreen images in an external editor like Photoshop.
