Yes. That’s the way to go. It’s actually a good workflow for most file based material, not just AVCHD.

It is possible to work with AVCHD natively, but in my experience, even if you have a supercomputer, the performance will be bad.

If your footage does not match your project frame rate, your clips already have a speed effect on them (note the green dot) called a motion Adapter. If you want to adjust the speed, you will have to do it in a sequence by opening the motion effect editor,

If you want a freeze, find the frame you want and change the speed to zero.

Try exporting Same As Source..NOT H.264…then take that file into Sorenson Squeeze, which came with your Avid software, and use one of its YouTube Presets.

See if it behaves any better. It seems more like a YouTube problem, since it looks correct in the Video Manager, but its worth a shot.

Have you tried manually selecting the correct AMA plugin to use in the link dialog as opposed to leaving it at the default setting of auto?

It may be guessing wrong when set to auto on some clips for whatever reason.

I rarely user the native titler for anything but slates. Always use After Effects for anything that needs to look nice.
I don’t think I am alone in that..probably why Avid doesn’t seem to devote much resources to titling.

That being said….Avid Marquee is very capable and has all sorts of options for animating stuff…just renders very slowly. It’s way deeper than the original TitleTool, which should really be thought of as “Legacy”.

Avid FX (Boris RED) and the new plugin you mentioned also get the job done.

Its been awhile since I have used it, but I’m pretty sure you can do what you want if you use Avid Marquee instead of the basic titler.

You might want to consider using another NLE that can work effectively with GoPro footage natively, with no transcoding, such as Premiere Pro or FCPX.

Unless you can get the software Matthew suggested to work for you in the field (maybe it works with Parallels on a Mac?), you are in for a world of hurt trying to make this work with Avid. I much prefer editing with Avid, but if transcoding is too much of a burden on your workflow, Avid might not be the best tool for this job.

As Michael pointed out, this is a feature in v7 called Frame Flex. Older versions cannot accomplish this, as all footage is scaled to the project frame size.

I would view and make selects in Adobe Media Encoder or Prelude and encode to Avid DNX HD.

In Avid, AMA link to the DNX HD files you created in Adobe and Consolidate. Very fast.

You can do much of what you want with the iOS app Air Display. You can move your timeline to the iPad and save your workspace that way. The iPad shows up as a third monitor in System Preferences/Displays. Your mouse cursor will always follow your touch, however. To do otherwise would require FCP being updated to allow some sort of independent touch interface which ain’t gonna happen since FCP7 has been dead and buried for 2 years. The hooks into the app just aren’t there for this kind of thing.
