You dont need a special utility for this. Just use Apple Disk Utility in your Applications/Utilities folder.

If you want this for the client monitor and not the computer monitor there are devices that are not too expensive that can do this without slowing FCP down with a plug in.
Horita makes one that goes for about $350 new. You can often find them cheaper on eBay.

Avid hasnt updated their Quicktime codec in many years and even with QT6, it barely functioned at all within FCP.
I am guessing you are not going to get too much cooperation between Cupertino and Avid on this.

Set it to capture across timecode breaks in the capture preferences and do not log it. Just mark in at the head of the tape and let it fly. The Avid will make a new clip after each break (after it can get a pre roll) and continue digitizing.
One thing that will mess this up is if the timecode after the break is earlier code than what precedes the break. Your Avid will think you are attempting time travel and will stop with an error message.

just match frame the clip. change the speed in the viewer. edit in place.

There is no built in capability for that.
You can use a free utility to convert them to something usable and retain timecode and metadata.

Not really. You can export the sequence as XML 1, though. That should get you pretty close. God help you if you used any features specific to FCP 5.

What type of system are you onlining on? If you are onling on an FCP system you dont need to export XML, just use Media Manager to create an offline copy of your sequence in the codec of your choice, then recapture.
Realisticially, there is nothing that does what you want as far as effects if you are moving to a different platform. Automatic Duck does a great job when moving to Avid, but its not a “Total Conform”.

Someone else had this problem a while ago, and it turned out that all his clips were imported animation files instead of tape sources.
There really isnt a way to make an EDL from those, as the EDL format was devised for tape based linear edit rooms.Could this be the case with you?
