Actually, if you have a copy of Avid Media Log…you can use it. Just export the bin as ALE and use Cinema Tools to convert to FCP batch list

You can capture via Firewire (if you don’t want to buy a card) or through one of the capture cards Bob mentioned.
For final output, you should consider rendering out a self contained DVCPRO HD movie and taking it to a post house with a Kona 3 and HDCAM-SR deck. The deck is complicated, you are better off doing this with people who do it all the time, if you are not familiar with it. Might save some money in the long run.

You didn’t say what kind of G5.
I have edited lots of DVCPRO HD on a G5 dual 2 GHZ. It works fine.
Editing and delivering 4:4:4 is silly. DVCPRO HD is not a 4:4:4 codec. You would be just making really huge files with no improvement in quality, as the compression happened in camera before you captured it. If you have a massive fast disk array, you can probably do it anyway, if you are hell bent on it.

I think he knows the overall duration, he just needs the segment times for his slate.
Your idea will still work though, if he adds edits to the slug where his segments start (or end).

The page I gave you has step by step instructions of what you asked. It doesnt talk about hardware at all.
You are on FCP 6.x right? English? I know the page number might be different in other versions of the manual.

You busted your butt making a whole series of shows and now you want to take the finished product and do a makeshift standards conversion….take a deep breath…if you have any way of affording it, get it done right.

You might want to look in the manual for Multiclip sequences. This might be a way to make multiclip work for you.
and yes, you can still have multiple viewer windows.
