Question 1: Match frame to the original clip. Change the speed to 100% in the Viewer, then edit into the timeline replacing the speed change clip.
Question 2: This is determined by which tracks have Auto Select turned on. If you don’t know what that means, search the term in FCP Help. You need to understand how it works.

What you want is Compressor/Limiter
You can do it in FCP, by Soundrack Pro, which came with the suite, is much better for this kind of thing.
Has presets you can try to get started and then tweek to your taste. -
Not sure I totally follow what you are doing….BUT
It sounds like you are putting an SD Quicktime into an HD sequence….FCP is then changing the field order of your sequence to lower field first (SD is lower, HD is upper) AND adding the “Shift Fields” filter to your all your HD footage to match the SD field order. When you remove the Quicktime, the “Shift Fields’ filter remains on all your clips, so you now have problems. Double click one of your HD clips and look in the filters tab…do you see the Shift Fields filter. If so remove them all by selecting all your clips and using the “Remove Attributes” command.

You need to use the leading zeroes. Clip 005 not Clip 5, otherwise the “2” in 23 will sort ahead of clip 5…get it?
The Mac OS 9 Finder was like this too.

Look at your audio output tab of your Sequence settings.

How cheap do you need? In the very cheap category, the WD MyBook Studio Edition (with FW800) should fit the bill.
I mainly use them for backup, but I have edited with them in a pinch (including DVCPRO-HD and 8 bit Uncompressed) and have not had any problems. Should be fine for DV.
Apple Store has the 1TB model for $200. You can find them cheaper if you look around on the web.

Terence’s way really is the best. Real Time and doesn’t require more than one track.

Was there a standard def offline done at 29.97 and the HD footage for online is 23.98?
If so, you need to convert the EDL to 23.98 before capture (Cinema Tools).
Why are you using an EDL anyway….what system was the offline done on?
