  • Audio EQ Settings For Voice And Music Mix?

Posted by Kevin Jones on April 8, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I’m trying to get a good audio mix on a FCP project.
A voice-over and music playing at the same time.
I want the music to be nice and loud,
but still be able to hear and understand the VO.

I seem to remember someone suggesting using the equalizer effect and setting the voice and music in such a way that they were complimentary to each other without competing.

If someone could make a reccomendation or suggestion I would appreciate the help.

    Thanks.

    What you want is Compressor/Limiter

You can do it in FCP, by Soundrack Pro, which came with the suite, is much better for this kind of thing.
Has presets you can try to get started and then tweek to your taste.

You can improve the intelligibility of human voice by boosting the area around 1.8KHz by +3dB, Q=1. You can also reduce interference from the music by cutting a hole in the music at 1.8KHz by -3dB, Q=1. You can do this in FCP or STP, but STP gives you more choices.

You can also use compression to make a voice appear stronger and reduce background noise. However, most recorded music is already compressed, so additional compression probably won’t help here. When voice and music compete, it’s better to use the equalization technique above.
