The best way would be to have your capture card (Kona, Decklink, Matrox) add the pulldown on output to tape. If you do not have one, then you can do it in Compressor.

You did not state your editing codec, but If you edited in ProRes @23.98, just use the ProRes preset in Compressor. Change the frame rate to 29.97 and Compressor. You do not need to change the Frame Controls to Best…just leave it set to fast. Compressor will add the proper pulldown. When you finish encoding, bring the file into FCP and use the modify timecode command to change to DF.

This has been posted a number of times….(Shane Ross, maybe?)

Yeah, let FCP do its thing and don’t try to multiple-task.

I can attest that worked for me. No more incomplete clips.

How is your audio monitoring set up?

do you have a Kona or Decklink Card?

If you have meter readings, the audio is likely there and you have something wrong in your monitoring setup

    Transcode to ProRes in Compressor.

DNXHD is not good for use within FCP?

    What version of Avid?

version 5 and up can take ProRes via AMA

  • People always get into trouble when they start futzing with all the settings on their own. The Easy Setups exist for a reason and should be used whenever possible. There are many, many settings, and it’s very easy to make a mistake if you have to change them all manually each time, regardless of your experience level. The Easy Setups also are a good indicator of what will work in real time in FCP.

I pointed out not long ago that Blackmagic is releasing a major update to Media Express in June (around the release of FCPX) . Some of the new features they are including would be odd to include if people could just capture in their NLE. I mean not many people use Media Express as their primary capture tool currently. But yes…I am just speculating.

  • You can use up to version 6.x of FCP ( included in Final Cut Studio 2) in your machine.
You can use up to OSX Leopard (not Snow Leopard) on your machine.

My previous computer was a dual 2.0 G5, and I was running Leopard and FInal Cut Studio 2 on it. My computer was older and slower than yours. I would configure the same on your machine. Trying to figure out the older version combinations is an incredible pain. FCP version 6.x is solid and pretty close in features to the current version.

You must realize that the last G5 tower was sold 6 years ago and most people who edit professioally have moved on to Intel. Our memories might be a little fuzzy about specific OS/FCP versions. There have been many updates over the years and they kind of blend together.
