Download the free Avid 30 day trial and edit on Avid.

If they are giving you Avid media, and you can’t get the producer to spend a dime to deal with it, I don’t see what choice you have that won’t cost you anything.
Then take your project and media to an Avid with hardware i/o for final output, if you need a tape master.

In QuickTime Pro 7 you have access to the aperture settings, where you can force it to display full size. QuickTime X does not have these controls. Hopefully QuickTime X will regain its pro features in Lion.

This is not really true. ProRes uses D1 pixels in SD, just like most everything else. They can also be Anamorphic in 16×9 SD. In HD, they generally are square, but can also be captured using HDV style (with 1440 pixels stretched to 1920)

Don’t try.
Convert them to QuickTime (in a codec that works well in FCP, such as ProRes) .
Google Flip4mac for a product that will enable you to do the conversion.

Years ago I had a similar problem and just manually uninstalled the plug in (moved it out of the plugins folder)
Then toggled visibility on the timeline (actually a duplicate), causing everything to unrender…

Since ProRes Proxy is not an option, you might do an old school transcode to Offline RT in Media Manager. Then when your done editing, collapse your multiclips, then reconnect to the original full res files.
The workflow for this is in the manual.

You can tell Spotlight not to index your media drives in System Preferences and see if the issue persists.

You may have an old version of the avid codec installed. Avid made some major changes to make it smpte compliant. Download and install the latest and see if it fixes the problem.
