    Are you archiving, dubbing, printing??
Are you using a software based editor? (final cut, adobe)
It’s always a matter of settings when ‘letterboxing’ is used.
Are you printing to tape from the computer or from a camera?
Sounds like your box is trying to cram 720×480 into 640×480.
Let me do some digging and I’ll try to see what you’re up against.
Keep us posted in the mean time!

    In Final Cut try this:
View –> External Video –> All Frames

    Refresh as well.

    Let me know!

I guess my questions really are:
When and why would you use this box for down conversion over software conversion?
Why would it be better than using Apple’s Compressor?
What’s to be gained from down conversion through this magic box?

    Hey Rhea,
I use the DR-HD100. as long as you have the correct time and date the clips on the HD will be time and date stamped.

  • Reuben,
The Sony deck wont work with JVC HD100 footage tapes.
However if you went from the camera to the deck via component, that would be fine.
    30p is really 29.97p.
Do you already have an HD100?
I am selling one if you are looking to buy.

Sorry to hear that you’re having problems.
Have you checked out the actual tape that you’re capturing from?
Sometimes if the tape even has a small stretch it can glitch.
Sounds like you’re doing everything right though with cleaning and all…
Is your 110 still under Manuf. Warranty?

The IOHD just seems like such a cool piece of gear. Keep me posted on the live HDSDI capture session and what you think about it.
That would great if you have a lead on that plate.
    Thanks for the help!

    They are different.
Just make sure that you always stick with electronics that are designed for your region.
They don’t just make PAL for the fun of it.

If you already have the HDV footage just convert it to whatever you’re used to working with. ProRes is great if the programs you use will take it. Shouldn’t be hard or take long. The cheap and easy way would be to use MPEG Streamclip (freeware) and convert your HDV to whatever. Let us know what ends up working for you.
