I am trying to make a timecode window dub of footage that I shot at 480/24p 16:9. The footage looks fine if viewed on a 16:9 monitor, but is squeezed horizontally on a 4:3 monitor.

When I’m making a dub of 720/24p 16:9 HD footage, the BR-HD50 simply letterboxes the footage on a 4:3 monitor during the downconvert. However, I can’t seem to get the letterbox effect with SD footage.

I have the “monitor out aspect” (0408) set to letterbox and it doesn’t do anything.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Are you archiving, dubbing, printing??
Are you using a software based editor? (final cut, adobe)
It’s always a matter of settings when ‘letterboxing’ is used.
Are you printing to tape from the computer or from a camera?
Sounds like your box is trying to cram 720×480 into 640×480.
Let me do some digging and I’ll try to see what you’re up against.
Keep us posted in the mean time!

Direct dub from BR-HD50 to DVD recorder. No software or computers involved.

Tried every combination of menu settings imaginable with no luck.

Because of time constraints, I ended up dubbing the footage squeezed. The client fortunately has a widescreen TV, so it will work allright.

From now on if I shoot 24p, I’ll shoot HD and then downconvert so I don’t have this problem.
