Thanks, that was really easy. I feel like I should have already known that.

I believe EDIT>DUPLICATE should do the trick.

You can either import the QT in an SD project and transcode the file once you’ve switched over to the HD projcet, or you can just import it directly into the HD project. Personally, I would just import it directly into the HD project, select “Do no resize smaller image” to maintain the original frame size and use “resize” or “pan & scan” to manipulate the QT from there.

To scale it to 1920×1080, choose the “Image properly sized for current format” option on import. This will alter you aspect ratio and cause some resolution issues, but that’s how it goes unfortunately.

If you have access to a Teranex (or any other uprez hardware) & Beta deck, I would lay the QT to tape and then digitize and uprez via the Teranex. That would be the best way to retain resolution, but most people do not have that equipment laying around.

    Hope this helps.

  • It was already set to off, and nothing happened when I switched between options. I’ve tried restarting everything, and that had no effect as well. I can paste already working splines built the exact same way that are taken from other effects in the same project and they will work fine. But when I create a new one to build a custom effect in a different spot it will not work. In the past I’ve had this issue while primarily onlining DNx145, 1:1, etc., but I’m currently working with 15:1 media so it should be easier on the RAM if that’s part of the problem (but I have 3GB, Windows XP can’t handle much more).

So it goes, I appreciate your help regardless. When we finally upgrade I will definitely revisit this.

I think the problem lies in my version of RED. I’m working with 3.0.4. Is this a new feature of 4? I talked with another editor in town far more skilled than I, and he tried it on 3 & 4. He said 4 actually creates a specific paint layer track where as a paint layer in 3 is merely a spline object on a 3D plane. Is this still an option in 3, or am I going to have to somehow convince management to upgrade?

I may just be blind, but I am not finding the option to set the color source to anything other than a solid or gradient. Where exactly is the option to change it to an image + image alpha?

So I can make a .psd of some of the brushes I am familiar with in Photoshop and import them for use with Boris. That’s great news. Do you suggest a size and resolution of the image I use, say 50px/50px @ 300dpi (I typically work with 1080i projects), or should I make it larger/smaller? Would it be better to work with .ai? And if you wouldn’t mind posting the steps that would be a great help.

    Thanks,

You are going to find compression issues like this when exporting for web. I would try putting a slight gaussian blur (2 to 5 point) over your graphic. For web delivery of SD material it should get rid of some of the mosquitoes and jagged edges.

  • Wait… I think I answered my own question. Holding the shift key while using the pen tool allows me to select multiple keys and manipulate them simultaneously.

However, is there anything similar to the lasso tool in After Effects that I can use to draw around an area and it then select those keys?
