You need to double click the freeze frame so it loads in your source window, then use the match frame to find your original source clip.

I think there is still a difference between the two, eventhough with todays technology that line is blurring. I have been a video editor for 17 years and I consider myself a video editor or just editor. I have worked on everything from :30 commercials to hour long documentaries, the final output for all of them have been video tape. If you work strictly on docs then you would be a doc editor. So, if you work with film for much of what you do, you would be a film editor.

Also, don’t forget that between the two, you’re dealing with frame rates, resolution quality and a whole host of other differences. But, like I said at the beginning it’s all starting to blur together.

So, long story short, if you cut commercials, then you would be a spot editor, if docs then a doc editor, news then a news editor.

I second Jon on Steve Bayes’ book! I have had the pleasure of actually being tutored by Steve a couple of years ago and I must say even after 13 years of editing on AVID there are still many tips and tricks to be learned.

One thing I suggest is to map you AVID keyboard as if it were your FCP keyboard. Not everything will translate, but most things will. This way you’re not having to relearn a new keyboard.

I’ve been an AVID editor for over 13 years and so I went the other way, mapping my FCP keyboard to what I use on my AVID keyboard.

I think you’ll find by doing this that you can concentrate on editing and not learning a new keyboard.

I have been looking over you list as well as the rest of the replies, but I in my opinion things such as Photographer blocks shot
and Officiant limits shooting position are things we deal with at least once a month. In my contract and meetings with the couple I make them quite aware of things that may happen during the day, a CYA, but I stress to them about church location and the Officiants rules to that particular church and also that try as I might, sometimes the photographer gets in the shot. It is going to happen, count on it. But I don’t think that these issues are reason for a refund.

I will answer yes to the question, with a but though. The but being there are different types of editors, there are story telling editors, there are editors who are very skilled in effects and or compositing, there are offline editors and then there are online editors. I consider myself somewhere in the middle, but there are time when the graphics are to intense or to time consuming to do, so I have two damn good graphics people to go to. I’m comfortable telling my clients my limitaions as far as graphics go and they are very grateful for that and they also appreciate the fact that I can bring a graphic artist in to do what they do best.

I’m not discounting what Chxeditor has to say, because there have been times where I have had to do it all and then some. We all have, but I’d rather be the editor and work in conjunction with a talented graphics person to deliver the final product. Most of my clients appreciate the fact that when they look at their bottom of line of me stopping down to do graphic or I can continue to edit and the graphics person can do their thing that in the long run they are not spending that much more.

I would recommend 201(Not an effcts course, but it covers some of the better short cuts), 301, 305 & I think it is 310, but I’m not sure. It should be about Intraframe effects.

I’m in the DC area as well and I’ve been editing on AVID since 1993. I have taken a couple classes over at Henninger, but Future Media Concepts also offers courses.

If you have the basics down, I would recommend some of the effect courses especially anything that has to do with intraframe editing (animatte).

Good day Al,

I’ve been editing for over 16 years and I am 38 now, but I still wind up doing some crazy hours. I have a full time gig, but I have a couple freelance clients as well, so about two weeks ago, I left my day job. I went to the freelance gig until 4 in the morning, I then had an hour drive back home, went straight to bed and an hour and a half later my son wakes me up. Talk about being in a fog, went to work on Thursday and Friday I repeated the same secnario. Good money, but a blown weekend. I was in bed by 6:30 pm Saturday night and slept for 13 hours.

This isn’t typical, but it still happens once in awhile. I applaud you for being a go getter and busting your ass. It is the best way to make a good impression on the other people around you when something good comes along, you’ll be on their list.
