I would keep the same naming convention that you are using in FCP, but without the dash.
I always find that the more detail I can give about a tape the better. As far as your 001 question, AVID works by seperate projects all together, so when you create a project, what ever you digitize to that project is relavant to only that project. Where as in FCP you can have multiple projects open at the same time.

Let me give a little background here, AVID for better or worse was one of the pioneers into non-linear editing. It wasn’t the first or maybe the best at the time, but good marketing and a willing to make it better as it went along, made AVID top dog. Sort of like Betamax and VHS in the 70s, VHS won the war. That being said, the other two programs FCP and Premiere were built with what AVID had already established, so as the other two products evolved they added their own way of doing things within each program. Every program has its good and bad points and things we’d all like them to have, the ultimate editing interface, but they don’t. I have been an AVID editor for over 13 years and yes there are things that I’d like to have them change, because a program like FCP has been able to come up with some nice features. But, at the same time there are some things that I’d like FCP to have that AVID does.

Now to answer some of your questions, in AVID the splice tool is named “add edit” and it works with what ever tracks you have highlighted in your timeline.

You can move clips around with the splice or overwrite arrows at the bottom of the timeline, the red arrow at the bottom (segment mode lift/overwrite) will allow you to move the clip in the timeline and when you release the clip it will overwrite what ever media there is in the timeline. The yellow arrow (segment mode Extract/ Splice-in) will allow you to move the clip the same way as the red arrow, but when you release the clip it will splice it into the timeline.

As far as the Audio goes, you can mark in and mark out just the audio by selecting just those audio tracks and doing a lift of that segment, or you could just overwrite your new audio back overtop of the audio you want to replace.

The one way that I know how to export title out of AVID is from inside Title Tool itself. You would have to open each title and then right click the mouse and select export title, but it only exports the title as a pict file. Also, once you have done that, it will not allow you to edit the text, you’d have to go back into Title Tool to do that.

I deal with this on a regular basis and it still baffels me how anything ever makes it to air. Whether its a :30 spot or the even when I am doing news. It doesn’t seem to matter, but what does matter is the creative process of being an professional editor. Somewhere along the line you still try to have some creative input, but for the most part you are at the mercy of the client/agency or even more so the agencies client. So at the end of the day, we are painting out moles, nipples and belly buttons, because not everyone may have seen any of the fore mentioned items. So it wouldn’t be in good taste to show the rest of the world. But at the end of the day, as long as the bill gets paid, we do what we have to do. And it makes me appreciate evenmore when I do get something I can sink my teeth into even more.

I would start with the Audio Tool and see how you are outputting, is the setting on stereo, mono or direct? Second I would try the Audio Mix Tool and see how your tracks are panned. Are they panned in the middle? Or some left, some right? Also when you say “export” are you making a quicktime or are you outputting to tape?
