FCP editor learning AVID
Posted by Cody Alberts on April 15, 2006 at 8:49 pmI am a long time FCP editor that is moving to LA. I want to maximize my employability and improve my Avid skills. I have a very basic knowledge of the interface and was wondering if there is any resources that anyone could suggest. I really like video based tutorials, but any books that anyone has used with good results would be very helpful.

April 16, 2006 at 6:51 pmThere is the DMTS DVD-ROM video. It is 7.5 hours of instruction.

Avid also has 2 hour video roms, with lessons, and those can be purchased in a bundle of 3 videos for $199.
Also check out, the Avid Handbook by Steve Bayes, 4th edition. There is a Peach Pit Avid XPress Pro book as well, which is a good reference tool for looking for specific help on a topic you’re stuck on.
For tips, try the CMP book, “On The Spot” with Avid DV and Xpress Pro. There are a lot of tips in that book. IN fact, it’s a book of tips. You read just parts of it at a time to help you through Avid processes that might otherwise not be understood as a new user to the platform.
Hope that helps.

April 18, 2006 at 4:18 pmGood day Cowboy,
One thing I suggest is to map you AVID keyboard as if it were your FCP keyboard. Not everything will translate, but most things will. This way you’re not having to relearn a new keyboard.
I’ve been an AVID editor for over 13 years and so I went the other way, mapping my FCP keyboard to what I use on my AVID keyboard.
I think you’ll find by doing this that you can concentrate on editing and not learning a new keyboard.

April 18, 2006 at 7:28 pmCheck out Sam Kauffmann’s book “Avid Editing – A Guide For Beginning and Intermediate Users”. It eased me through the FCP to Media Composer transition and I HIGHLY recommend it!

June 14, 2010 at 7:02 pmHey guys
Appreciate this is an ancient thread. But has anyone had problems with starting the first project in Kauffmann’s book? I keep getting Media Offline in the source monitor when opening clips
Have followed his setup to the letter! Where am I going wrong? Can anyone say online without being able to see where I am obviously scr@win up!?
Am an experienced FCP editor relocated to LA (much like Cowboy!) – running AVID MC 4.0.2 on a 2009 Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256mb VRAM
