I ended up turning hardware acceleration all of the way down under the advanced setting/troubleshooting in my display card settings. My card is a triplehead Matrox Parhelia APVE. Both Vegas and Premier no longer crash when playing back these files. Go figure!

Since you will be playing back your BluRay disc at a very important time, make sure that you have the chance to ‘test play’ your disc well before the service. Use this time to check for any problems and let the disc play all the way through. You can use this time to set audio levels, etc. Set and note all lighting and volume levels in advance and watch and listen to the playback from different places in the seating area. No matter how good the disc looks and sounds at home, playing it at another venue can often bring unwanted surprises. Good luck.

I have one of these cameras. We use our main HD cameras to shoot green screen, but will run a short test to see how both the 1920x1080i and the 1280x720p footage it will record holds up. There is a huge difference between properly lit green screen footage keyed in Keylight within After Effects and on a built-in keyer in your NLE. You should test under properly lit conditions and test it for yourself in Keylight or another proper keying app. You might be surprised.

This happened to me as well. As an absolute last resort, I used a pair of adjustable pliers, of course risking major damage to the lens itself. It worked and no damage.

If you have (and your client has or will have) a BluRay Burner, you can output between 25 and 50 GB to a single disc. I recently converted and stored multiple AVI files for a client archive this way just using Nero for the burns.

I have been shooting aerial video footage from both rotary and fixed wings for many years. Certain helicopter brands/models introduce some nasty vibrations and it’s the frequency of the vibration that can make or break a handheld shot. Short of using a pro nose or door-mount(read very expensive, but very effective), I have rented gyroscopic lens adapters (less expensive and cumbersome)on occasion, but have often resorted to the little, buzzy Robinson copter. The frequency is much higher and is easier to ‘filter out’ with your body when going handheld. With the Robinson, it is cramped quarters, and the windblast on the front of your lens when hanging out an open side is always a factor. Larger (big lensed) broadcast cameras are so long from lens hood (if needed) to battery mount, that you really have to plan your ergonomics in advance. A DSLR with the correct ‘rig’ setup would be a lot shorter. Be sure to rent a minimum amount of ‘test time’ and go up and shoot short clips with a variety of settings to playback in your system before committing to the actual paid shoot. The clock ticks quickly when you are up there struggling to get the shot.

Jake, I have several self built quadcore workstations with raid arrays that work very well with Vista 64 when using Premiere CS4. I have hesitated in upgrading to Windows 7. Let us know if you resolve the performance issue. Also, can you tell us how you have your Matrox Mini set up(capture and/or display) and how well it is working for you?

My recent experience with Adobe’s Speech to Text modality was very frustrating. You can indeed do most of the things that you listed, but the accuracy of this promising app is terrible. Even when using a crystal clear, properly enunciated audio file and whether in Adobe Premier or Adobe Soundbooth, the results are very disappointing. Good luck!
