Thanks, Michael. Still looking at the current crop of DSLR’s that shoot both HD and SD, and the t2i is on my short list. The lack of realtime HDMI out while recording on the t2i is a bummer. I realize that the 7D provides for that, but the short record times at 1080p is a real shame. Really hoping for Sony to release their Alpha 1000 soon for comparison.

Thanks for the quick response. In this project, I have a 71 minute single video/audio file with a menu setup of markers set for first play plus approximately 12 other sections as well as play all. Am I correct in assuming that the .scc file will always be synced to the video/audio file no matter how the menu selection is set up?

I would be watching for a PC based laptop with USB 3, which would allow for some very fast I/O rates from an external Raid box. I would think that we will see qualified laptop systems soon that will sell for under $2,500. Sure hope so!

If you have your edit complete, render a copy of the voice track(s) as a .wav,.mp3 or other audio file format. Using a program like title factory, you can create the .scc file and bring that into your Vegas 9.0d. Or, you can have a 3rd party company, such as Automatic Sync Technology, create the .scc file for you. You upload the voice track audio file to them, they email you the file when it is completed. You can also add the .scc file in Adobe Encore during authoring. Good Luck!

The tech specs that you included indicate that you can select 1080i, 720p or SD out of the HDMI port. One would have to actually plug it into an HDMI monitor or the HDMI port on a field recorder and see if you can indeed view/record while you are recording in camera. Some DSLRs will not record if an HDMI cable is even plugged in – they are intended for playback only. Some will not give you the full uncompressed signal out. Some will blackout the LCD screen when recording to an external device.

I could not find specs posted on the a850 and it’s near twin a900, that detailed the hdmi output. If you own this camera, what does the output show on an hdmi monitor? These cams have 25mp sensors and Zeiss-built lenses. Hopefully, the Alpha 1000 and small cousins will be at the NAB show this coming week. At a recent show, prototypes of these units featuring HD video capabilities were displayed.

The t2i reportedly does not have a real-time simultaneous hdmi out while recording to the card. That negates the use of an add-on hdmi monitor. Perhaps Magic Lantern will provide the hack to fix that.

Don’t abandon your Z1u just yet! DSLR’s are still limited for certain types of acquisition, but mixing the 2 different frame rates will always be a pain.
