60i (z1u) and 24p (7D)
Hi,
Well… now I’m shooting with 2 of the canon’s 7D’s and 1 SONY z1u camcorder. I hear good things about the 7D’s 24p video format, but Im used to shooting only with z1u and rendering to 29.976fps DVD. How should I work now? Shoot 24p with the 7D? or 30fps? I’ll be editing in Vegas or Final Cut, either or how will it be in the timeline (editing)? What about render? Render for DVD and render for HD? (e.g. Blu-Ray)Thanks in advance.

Not quite sure what the question is there. DVDs support 24p. Also there’s no such thing as 29.976 video. There’s 29.97 and there’s 24p (aka 23.98). You cannot have both 29.97 and 23.98 in the same track on a DVD without converting one to the other format. Typically I recommend converting the 29.97 to 24p unless there’s a much greater amount of 29.97 material in the edit than 24p. You can do this in Compressor.
I’d personally recommend you stop shooting with the Z1U completely and use on the 7D. It’s got a far better picture and is true 24p while the Z1U is HDV at 29.97- not a complementary format.

Don’t abandon your Z1u just yet! DSLR’s are still limited for certain types of acquisition, but mixing the 2 different frame rates will always be a pain.

Aye — your Z1 has much better audio circuitry. Don’t get rid of it yet.
I’d recommend shooting at 30p (29.97) on your 7D, and use compressor to deinterlace and convert your Z1 footage to 29.97 progressive. You’re throwing away some image detail in the deinterlace process — but it’ll cut together more nicely. Typically, when I shoot with the Z1 or V1, I bring it down to 720p30 to edit.

Thanks for quick replies guys, alright so keep the z1u, and for events such as weddings – run as main? all shooting at 30fps… but this conversion from the z1u to progressive…never done that before…how? Thanks again.

FYI, for editing 7D footage in Vegas you may want to consider the DVFilm EPIC plugin. It enables realtime editing of the h.264 files without transcoding.
