Where are you monitoring your video output when you say that you see the distortions in the ‘white spaces’ of the video? You may want to check your video levels. If your ‘whitest’ whites read hot, you may want to consider bringing them down. Some video monitoring systems can show ‘tearing’ when whites are over boosted. Just a thought.

I build all of my own systems and recently finished my 4th edit workstation in the past 18 months. All 4 systems share a common theme – Quadcore proc, 8 GB of ram, a fast system drive, a large raid 0 media drive with (2)1TB 7200rpm sata drives, and an extra large sata for backup. I have no problem playing back HDV and AVCHD on the timeline in PPro CS4. All media remains on the Raid and all projects are backed up to the internal sata as well as to another networked system. A Raid 0 configuration is cheap and easy to put together but you will need either the Pro or Ultimate edition of Windows Vista or Windows 7 in order to stripe your (2), or more, sata drives into a raid configuration. Thanks Chris. I didn’t think of that and it does work. Too bad that Adobe has such a poor rate of accuracy. Maybe they will improve it with CS5.

I opened an Audition session that used the audio only file for transcription, and the text showed up this time. However, the audio that the client supplied was really poor. Even with noise redux and volume changes, the speech-to-text accuracy was pretty bad. It was enough, however, for me to cut and paste into my scripting program to designate scene changes. Hopefully, Adobe will improve it’s accuracy.

Yes, AE does have timecode overlay, as does Premiere. What I am really looking for is a way to view the existing date/time stamp that was recorded in camera on the original AVCHD clips, while in Premiere Pro, before exporting to Media Encoder. It needs to stay with the downconvert to DV, visible to the legal firm for review after burning to DVD.
