EQ can certainly improve a recording. You might explore using the Compressor as well. While there might be guidelines on using eq for specific situations (try Google-ing), it usually comes down to what sounds best to you. There’s an Audio Professionals forum on the Cow that might help. Your problem with the sound board is probably simple overload. They fed you a very hot mix which overloaded the input of your camera. You might invest in some in-line pads. These are devices which passively lower the gain. You’d probably want switched ones with various gain reduction options.

Bob Zelin wrote an article a while back about the Dulce Pro Extender. As I understand it, this expands the number of slots you can use. If your tests go well and you need the extra slots this might be an option.

Search the Audio Professionals forum and you’ll find many recommendations re your audio questions. My suggestion is to upgrade FCP as there’s a lot of P2 functionality you lose staying with FCP5.

I’ve never seen one. If you need a slowed-down track do it in a DAW, bounce it and use that file for playback. An advantage of this approach would be you can pitch shift, too, if you don’t want the pitch affected by the speed change.

There are numerous SFX packages that include or are dedicated entirely to ambiances in stereo, and an increasing number made for 5.1. Google “sound effects” or “5.1 sound effects” and you’ll see the competition.

Tech support is so critical. When we put together our system, ATTO and our integrator were amazingly helpful. We faced the firmware issue that affected some Seagate drives. We couldn’t do the firmware fix ourselves since we’re a Mac shop with only a couple of PCs and none with the specs needed. So our integrator took back the drives, updated the firmware and had them back to us a day later.

Did you export a self-contained QT from FCP and then use that in Compressor? If not try that. First check if the exported QT exhibits the problem? If not, use that file in Compressor to make the h.264s. If the h.264s exhibit the problem you may need to add padding in Compressor’s Geometry tab of the Inspector. Padding is explained in Compressor’s manual. If the exported QT has the problem look at the clips that you cropped to make sure they didn’t slide to the side slightly. Check the center points in the Motion tab.

Was anything being cropped that might have shifted fields? How did you encode the h.264? Did you use QuickTime Conversion? If so, try Exporting a self-contained QT Using Current Settings. Then use that file in Compressor to encode the h.264. If you used that workflow, did you turn on Frame Controls in Compressor? You can set your field dominance in Frame Controls.

Is this happening during a transition? If so, it might be a render issue. Select/highlight the transition(s) and render by going to Sequence Menu > Render Only > Full. Even when there is no render line over the transition this is sometimes necessary. I’ve never found out why. It’s just one of those little “things.”

How is your client going to use the mpeg? I’m assuming it’s mpeg2. That can be used for a DVD at lowish data rates (under 7mbps), or it might be a transport or program stream for broadcast which would be 17 to 25mbps. You’ll have no problems shrinking the size with mpeg. The issue is more about quality than size unless it’s for DVD. Then, you’ll be safely under 4GB regardless.
