Try Disk Warrior. I’ve had drives disappear and Disk Warrior has brought them back. As long a the drive hasn’t been inadvertently erased, it might work. It’s not expensive and definitely worth a try.

Another monitoring option to consider is the Matrox MXO and a Cinema 23 or the above mentioned Dell. We have the BT-LH1700W and a MXO. Side by side they look identical when the MXO is properly set up.

Get a copy of Disk Warrior and try that. If you can see the drive in Apple Disk Utility, you can try a repair with that, although, Disk Warrior is much better.

Who has the original DVDs that were shot by the XDCAM? They wouldn’t have thrown those away.

Did the person who did the upgrade clone the system as a backup before upgrading? Maybe you files are on that drive – if it exists.

Walter, just curious, does the captured footage with wrong numbers match your logged footage? Do you get the pictures you want? If so, have you tried recapturing using the original log numbers and see if FCP converts those to the same wrong numbers? Does it do this consistently? Is the error repeatable?

I don’t transfer this way so I don’t know all the details, however, I know you have to set the camera in the proper mode to do this. On the HPX500 you have to set the PC Mode (in Other Functions menu) to 1394 Device and then go into the MCR Mode. 1394Device Connect should appear in the viewfinder.

Have you tried to use the repair mode in your camera and see if that might help. The HD Log (and maybe P2 Log) app also has the repair capability. I have no idea if this will help, but it’s worth a try.

Have you tried copying the four to another drive? Is that possible?

Our 500 is markedly better than any Beta we have shot. We shoot in HD and release in SD. I’m sure any dealer you’re working with would be happy let you do a side-by-side test shoot.

    August 22, 2007 at 2:11 pm in reply to: Field P2 workflow…. update/recap please?

Our workflow is very similar to yours. However, we added one more layer of protection. We transfer in the field to a mirrored raid usings the Duel and MCP. However, at night, we copy the day’s work from the raid to another drive. Ultimately, that drive will be the project’s archive drive, but it gives us one more level of protection. Also, that drive is carried separately from the raid 1 drive.

August 22, 2007 at 2:02 pm in reply to: Why “Bounce” takes so long?

Describe what you’re doing in a bit more detail. Do you have a transcript of the interview or a log sheet with edits marked? How many edits are there in an hour show? Are you doing really detailed edits like adjusting pauses, removing breaths and mouth noises, adjusting pacing, or just removing bad takes? Do you playback at 2x or 4x (or greater) speeds?

When I’m working from a script with marked edits, then I can move fast. Doing one hour of material in two hours is possible. It’s really based on number of edits and whether you have to think about the edit. Making a simple edit where you delete a marked bad take should take 15 to 30 seconds. If you have to think where to make the edit, it will take longer. If you have 60 edits which take 30 seconds each that’s 30 minutes. Of course you have to add in the time it takes to listen to the track and you also have to breathe.
