I should have mentioned this in my first post. We have a Vocas remote zoom for our HPX500. I’m not sure if they work with the 200. However, it looks like they have a focus unit that works with the 200. It’s the MFC-1. It has a remote cable if you look in the accessories link.

    Here’s their site:

Great article, Barry. I wish we could simply enter the name directly into the camera. Also, in your explanation of the probability of the same number coming up twice, I believe the chance is 1 in 12,960,000 (10x10x10x10x36x36). For example 0001AB is different from 0002AB.

We use Sorenson Squeeze. There’s a version just for Flash so you don’t have to purchase the entire encoding package. Just make sure whatever system you use to have the On2 VP6 plugin. It makes a tremendous visual improvement.

August 24, 2007 at 1:10 pm in reply to: P2 drives won’t mount on mac

I’m not a tech guy when it comes to drives, etc., but after doing what Jan suggests, if you still have problems, maybe try to run a PC disk utility on the drives to see if that helps.

I share your concern about P2 cards and storing them. What we do is off-load the P2 cards to a mirrored RAID connected to a laptop, and then play a bit of every clip from the drive before reformatting the P2 card. At the end of each day, we then copy the contents of the RAID to a second drive for added backup. That drive eventually becomes the archive of the project.

August 23, 2007 at 7:53 pm in reply to: Piano Miking?

Here are a few links that might help. There are close and far-miking techniques. I like to get a bit back to hear some of the room. If it’s possible, see if you can get a few minutes with the talent before the wedding to experiment. It’s very possible her or she will want to “try out” the instrument before playing.

We have a Panasonic BT-LH1700W broadcast monitor (which has received very positive reviews from the pasture) and a MXO with Cinema 23. Side-by-side they are virtually identical.

August 23, 2007 at 1:30 pm in reply to: HPX500 vs Digibeta

We have now shot projects in both DVCPro50 and DVCPro HD. I have not shot side-by-side in both codecs to compare them. However, we were very happy with the look of both. I might try this next time we shoot and see if there’s a difference. Since we do color correction anyway, minor differences would be irrelevant.

If your question was whether we saw a difference when downconverting from HD to SD, yes, the color is a little different. But, you’d expect that. After all, you are losing information when downconverting. IMHO, I think the end result of downconverting HD to SD is superior to shooting in SD.

August 23, 2007 at 12:26 pm in reply to: Simple P2 Viewer for Mac?

Raylight is terrific. It saved my life when making 15 hours of timecode dubs. Before I heard about it I was looking forward to capturing 15 hours of footage to my RAID then making the tc dubs. With my archive drive with all the MXFs connected to my MBP, Raylight created a folder on the Mac with a small (I think 4k) QT file representing each MXF clip. I simply imported those small QT files with FCP, laid them out on a timeline, applied a timecode reader and played out to a DVD burner. BTW you use QT player to view any of those small QT files if that’s all you want to do. And the tech support is fast and excellent!

What editing application are you using? If I was removing a space in Pro Tools, I’d select the space by clicking and dragging then hit delete and Pro Tools would delete the space and suck up the ends to eliminate the hole. Same thing would happen with a stutter. Highlight the region from the first instance of the word to the start of the second instance of the word and hit delete.
