    Hello,

In two weeks I will be shooting a wedding in which a grand piano will be present. A soloist of relative import will be there playing and the client has added another camera with operator just to record the piano. The camera will be a DVX100B . For mics I have the typical collection of Shure Omni directional stick mics and a shotgun or two. Can I pull of a reasonable recording of this piano with two channels on the DVX100? Where should I place the mics?

    Many thanks.

    Nate

Here are a few links that might help. There are close and far-miking techniques. I like to get a bit back to hear some of the room. If it’s possible, see if you can get a few minutes with the talent before the wedding to experiment. It’s very possible her or she will want to “try out” the instrument before playing.

Omnis are a good choice as they don’t have a “proximity effect”
Placement depends on what you are looking to pick up. Usually even spaced halfway between the hammers and the soundboard. If there is a sound guy on hand for any P.A. for the event you may want to ask him if he has direct outputs from his console for the channels that are miking the piano. Then you can leave the audio from the other cam in the timeline for ambience. If not go with two spaced omnis bring them back for more room or close for less.

    Thanks,
