This is very subjective. There have been times where I have spent 30 minutes on a single edit getting it just right. Other times I can blast through many edits in a short time. I’ve just finished a rough edit of a podcast for a company where we recorded a roundtable discussion. The final rough length is 12:30. It took me five hours.
You did three minutes in two and a half hours. To me, that’s not out of line, particularly, if you had to work with each edit to get what you want. If you’re just starting out, you will get faster. It’s best to know your editing application really well and be able to take advantage of your keyboard shortcuts, etc. That will improve your editing productivity.

If you have a laptop in the field with you check out P2 Genie. It works with Mac and PC. It both off-loads P2 cards and formats them. And you can have it do that automatically. I don’t advocate that since I think you should first play back clips from the hard drive to make sure all is well before formatting the P2. You can name your folders and have their number incremented automatically, or name them by time/date. Very nice, inexpensive program.

I know what you mean, Larry. However, you brought up two good additional points about a phase switch on the mixer and 1/4″ TRS plug wiring.

If you are connecting to and from your mixer with XLR connectors, reversing pins 2 & 3 at one end of one cable will throw the phase out 180 degrees resulting in the sound you hear. Pin 1 is ground.
I don’t remember seeing a phase reversal switch in FCP, so your problem is probably your cables as Chris pointed out. You can quickly test this with a continuity tester. Disconnect the cables and test the continuity between all the pins: 1 to 1, 2 to 2 and 3 to 3. If you don’t have continuity from 2 to 2 or 3 to 3 then one pin is connected incorrectly at one end. Then, you’ll have to open the connectors at each end and look to see where the problem is.

Interesting. My 2.44 MBP is slower than my Dual 2.5 G5 comparing AfterFX renders. The G5 is using a faster SCSI drive which could account for the difference.

Raylight lets you use QT to view MXF files directly. It also lets you use MXF files in FCP without having to do a P2 import.

Downside is it ties up your camera while you off-load cards. We use a MBP, Duel Adaptor and RAID1 drive which off-loads 16GB cards in 8 minutes.

If you do a Save As you can create a ref video. I just tried it with a DVCPro HD clip and it plays and has the same parameters as the original.
If you Export (Movie to QT Movie), you have to write an entire new clip and I don’t know if there is any loss. I tried that, too, and a quick look seemed to show no obvious problems. The only difference I could see was the four tracks of audio from the original track were made into a stereo track. The frame rate remained 23.98 fps.
You might also try to post this on the Panasonic P2 forum.
