I’m wondering if anyone has used Firewire Host mode and a powered external drive to offload P2 cards directly from the camera?

I’d never heard of this feature until I got my camera, seems like a simple alternative to a P2 Store or a laptop. It seems to work like the P2 store, in that it formats the drive and then creates partitions in the same size as each P2 card unloaded. It also includes a Verify option. Of course I’d still be a bit paranoid, but it seems that paranoid comes with the P2 territory…

Downside is it ties up your camera while you off-load cards. We use a MBP, Duel Adaptor and RAID1 drive which off-loads 16GB cards in 8 minutes.

Oh sure, there’s a definite benefit to having an off-camera P2 dump, I just can’t justify spending another $2000 or so on gear.

For now I don’t foresee many projects where my existing P2 storage will be inadequate… but on the off chance it does become an issue, this may be an affordable solution.

I was just surprised that I’d never heard anyone mention it.
