    Yes. You should see the video out the S and composite outputs and PTs will remain on your computer monitors. That’s the way it works here.

    The way we do it is to use a Canopus box. It connects to our computer via Firewire and outputs video to two NTSC monitors – one in the control room and one in the booth. Here’s a link https://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php

    Your video has to be NTSC DV video. Then, in Pro Tools you have to select Video Out Firewire in the Options menu. When you play, the video will not appear on your computer screen anymore, but will be output to your monitors via the Canopus box.

    What about opening in QT Player and exporting them from there with a different name (maybe even as a ref file), then importing to FCP?

    I believe you have to format it in the camera. How big a card are you using. I think you only need a 64MB card. A card over 2GB might not work.

    Why not just play the video out of FCP into a DVD recorder? You can even add the timecode reader filter in FCP and you’ve got a window dubbed DVD. You can make simple chapters if you want to take the time to do that. I just made hours of timecode dubs this way.

    If you want to save even more time and not have to import all your footage at the start, you can use Raylight, which will allow FCP to handle all the MXF files WITHOUT importing them. Raylight is for Mac or PC. Here’s the link https://www.dvfilm.com/raylight/

    If your dubbing deck allows, you can set its start timecode to the same as your source source deck. If the source and record deck can listen to ref sync, the timecode should stay close. Similarly, you might be able to jam sync the code if you can get the source to play out code at the start for a few seconds so the other deck could jam to it.

    We just completed two shoots with P2 cards. Off-loading with a MBP using the Duel Adaptor connected to the Express Card it takes 8 minutes for a 16 GB card to an external FW800 drive. Your initial experience of 1 min per GB via the pcmia should still hold true. I have no idea why everything slowed down. Are there any other drives attached that might be hogging resources? Are you using the same drives that once were faster?

    Export a ref movie from FCP. Drag that into Compressor. Choose from the presets a widescreen choice and encode the mv3. Also choose ac3 to encode your audio. Search on the DVDSP forum how to properly do ac3. In DVDSP import your mv2 and ac3 and go from there. All the answers are on the Cow. DVDSP-specific info will be on that forum.

    We don’t shoot HDV so I have no experience with it. However, we have down-converted DVCPro HD timelines to SD by placing the HD sequence in a SD sequence. As the HD was 16:9 we had to scale it up to fill the 4:3 screen and then render. In our case there was no softening.
