P2 offload times…. does this sound right to you guys?

We have been using a P2 workflow since just about then the hvx200 came out. We started with 4 gig cards, then 8gb, and now we have a bunch of 16gbs. In the past, it used to take us approx. 8 mins to dump a 8gb card. We use one of two powerbooks and transfer via the pcmia to eithier a Firewire drive or the internal drives. Nowadays for some reason, 8GB cards are taking up to 23 mins to download and the 16gbs over 30 mins. I cant seem to get these offload times down no matter what i do. Ive tried offloading to internal drives, ext. firewire drives, direct from camera to computer. The different methods may yield SLIGHTYL faster times but not the 1 min/gig im used to.
So m question is, how long should an 8 and a 16 gb card take to offload and what is the fastest method using our powerbooks or any other solution.

We just completed two shoots with P2 cards. Off-loading with a MBP using the Duel Adaptor connected to the Express Card it takes 8 minutes for a 16 GB card to an external FW800 drive. Your initial experience of 1 min per GB via the pcmia should still hold true. I have no idea why everything slowed down. Are there any other drives attached that might be hogging resources? Are you using the same drives that once were faster?

I don’t know why it’s that slow either, but that’s not right or normal. Keep looking for the cause.
On my WinXP laptop a 16GB card takes about 8:30 to transfer. On a proper modern system you should never get slower than 1min/gb, and you should be getting more like 2gb/min.

Getting 8 minutes for 16G using the dual adaptor also. What a difference.

I’ve got a PowerBook G4 (1.5 GHz) with 2 GB RAM and can usually DL an 8 GB card in 6 1/2 min. via the PCMCIA slot.
Odd, but there was one occasion that it took about 20 minutes to DL one card (been using them since last August when they first came out). There was nothing different that I was doing.
I didn’t think of it at the time, but open the Activity Monitor to see if there’s another program that’s draining your resources. Perhaps there’s a virus checker that’s going into overdrive.
Have you tried restarting the computer during those times to see if that “knocks some sense into it?”

I just started with the P2 workflow and so maybe this is obvious, but if you verify, it takes twice as long. Off the camera direct to hard drive it’s taking half an hour for a 16GB card, but it is set to verify.

Appreciate the attempt, however, these are 8 GB cards, not 16 GB. And they’re not copying from (through) the camera. They’re being removed from the camera and being placed directly into the PCMCIA slot in the side of a PowerBook G4. The abnormally lengthy transfer time is not a standard occurrence – it’s sporadic. Happened to me a couple times, but seems to be happening to the other individual more frequently.
Congrat’s on getting those 16 GB cards, though… 😉

Thanks everyone for your responses. I dont know what is going on over on my end. But now that i hear some of you are getting even 2gb/min there is no way i am going to settle for these super long times im suffering now. I am going to try a bunch of different things with different drive and other powerbooks and see what conclusive findings i can come up with. I will then post so you guys can maybe have a little more info on what could be going wrong. Once again I appreciate the help.
