We just acquired a Canon XL H1. I would like to shoot in HDV, so that we will have HD footage for the future. However, we are still working in SD, for now. Can I convert HDV footage from this camera to clean, 4:3 SD footage in FCP? I tried converting it with a menu setting in-camera when I captured it, but it came out 16:9 SD. FCP then letterboxes the footage, and I need it full frame. If I try to drop the HDV media into an SD sequence and scale it vertically to fit, it gets soft. We’re using FCP 6, by the way. Does anyone know the answer?

We don’t shoot HDV so I have no experience with it. However, we have down-converted DVCPro HD timelines to SD by placing the HD sequence in a SD sequence. As the HD was 16:9 we had to scale it up to fill the 4:3 screen and then render. In our case there was no softening.
