As Michael says, use Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. And when exporting from FCP be sure to select DVD Studio Pro markers or Compression Markers. FCP automatically creates a marker every time there’s a cut or transition. Compressor uses these to make a much better encode.

When you say you’re editing in 4×3 with your Sony edit system are you seeing an anamorphically squeezed image on your monitor? If so, when you capture that in FCP it should remain anamorphic. When you play it, with the Sequence Setting for anamorphic checked, it should be 16×9 on your monitor. You should also check in the Browser that the anamorphic field (scroll right) is checked. You don’t say what the final output should be. But, usually, the player will adjust the image to 16×9 or 4×3 with letterbox automatically.

Another thought is to shorten the arm which should reduce the movement at its end. Shorter moment arm = less force at its end. Maybe the addition of some springs between the arm and base might dampen some vibration. Experiment with different attach points and strength springs.

Your idea of exporting the 4×3 as 16×9 makes sense. You might want to do that with Compressor. That way you should be able to continue your edit with the 16×9 footage while Compressor works in the background.

My suggestion is shoot a minute of video at the camera store, transfer it to a pen drive (if that’s possible), and see how easy it is to L & T with FCP. You’ll also be able to judge the quality and workflow that way.

The reason Compressor is superior is its scaling algorithms are better. Turn Frame Controls on and choose the best quality settings in the Encoder tab of Compressor’s Inspector.
