You’ve done nothing wrong. DVCPro HD is an anamorphic format. After it’s transferred to FCP it will play as 1280×720. However, before you edit, you should choose which of the 2 formats will be your edit format (I’d choose DVCPro HD). As long as the frame rates of the 2 camera are the same, you can render in FCP (set your render settings to Best). Some might suggest using Compressor to convert one format to the other. Search the Cow and you’ll find lots of discussion about this. If the frame rates of the 2 cameras are diffrent, then you’ll have to convert one to the other with Compressor. There are lots of posts how to do this, too.

I’d use my Kona 3 to do the downconversion in real time. This is discussed over and over, so do a search and you’ll find lots of answers. The prevailing opinion will be hardware downconversion is best, but if you must do it with software, then use Compressor.

I use G-Tech drives most of the time. G-Drive Q for archive and with editing on my MBP a G-RAID 2 for faster performance. There are other good drives out there. I’m not sure what’s going on. But, in addition to trashing pref be sure to repair permissions. If you have Disk Warrior, run that, too, on your system drive. Repairing permissions and Disk Warrior help the OS know where things are which is related to your issue.

I’m glad you’re making progress. The probable reason you need to render audio is the clips probably don’t have 48 kHz audio sample rates which is required by FCP (and most pro video apps). I’m not sure you can change the audio sample rate on your Flip, but I’m pretty certain you can in Streamclip. Once the clips have 48k audio, you won’t need to render them.

Dropped frames most usually relate to a slow capture scratch drive. Is your drive an external or the Macbook’s internal drive? If you’re using your internal drive, that’s probably the problem. You should never capture to your system drive. Use an external Firewire (NOT USB) drive. The type of drive you need is related to your editing codec. For instance, a Firewire 400 is fine for DV, but wouldn’t work well (or at all) with an HD codec. For that you’d need a FW800, or better still a RAID array.

As for listing your system and software specs, that’s definitely not impolite. Listing them helps folks diagnose your issues a lot faster.

I’m not a hardware expert, but I don’t think reformatting will fix a bad block. It’s possible that when reformatting the Mac will “learn” where the bad block is and skip it, but I’m not sure. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

Raylight’s a good way to do it as is Calibrated’s MXF Import for OSX and MXF4Mac. However, FCP could do this from FCP v5. In FCP 6 in the File menu choose Log & Transfer. You point FCP to the MXF volumes and you can view your clips, choose ins & outs and transfer them to the Logging Bin in FCP. I believe MXFs can be used directly in CS4, but not CS3.

#12 in the instructions you linked to reads, “Because the 170 has the ability to increment frame rates externally by assigning that function to one of the three user buttons, the six 170 “looks” contained in each of the 18 scene files are identical.” It sounds like it’s working as described.

As for restoring the old scene files, there may be a way to restore factory presets. I don’t know how to do that. Check the manual.

Another thing you can try is reverse what you did in making the SD card. Remove the scene1, scene2, etc. files from the trash, replace the existing (new files you downloaded) files with the ones from the trash and load them back to the camera per the instructions. Hopefully, that works.
