We have a Panasonic 17″ High-Def monitor we use in the field. They have a larger monitor, but it would be more cumbersome to travel. Be sure to checkout Flanders Scientific monitors, too. Your camera has a HD-SDI out which you’d connect to your monitor. No adaptor necessary – just a SDI cable with BNCs on each end.

Please explain exactly what you want to do. What codec did you edit with and what codec do you want to go to? Do you have source media you used to create proxies with which you edited? Did you capture from tape? Please explain your workflow.

If you have a Kona or other i/o card or box, you can downconvert in real time to tape. Most people agree this produces higher quality results than Compressor. That said, Compressor can do the job if you can deliver your program as a file. Ask the broadcaster if they have a preference of file format.

I’m wondering if there might be a ref problem between the Multi Bridge Pro and the mixer. Are you using digital audio connections(aes or spdif) or analog. I’m not familiar with the details of that mixer. Does it need a ref signal or word clock. If the audio isn’t synced properly that could be a reason. You might try disconnecting the mixer and running the output of the Multi Bridge directly to the speakers. Just be sure to lower the gain so you’re not combing speaker parts from your hair.

You should do an Audio Mixdown if you haven’t: Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown. A while back I had some weird audio play issues so I trashed prefs, repaired permissions and ran Disk Warrior. I haven’t had an audio wierdness since.

I don’t know the camera, but I suggest the HD 24p setting if you’re going for a film look. The camera shoots HDV so you can capture in HDV, or if your computer and version of FCP supports ProRes, use that (checkout the Easy Setups for HDV). Many people like the ProRes codec for its editability (is that a word?), but others are fine with HDV native. Search the Cow any you’ll find a lot of discussion about this.

Search this forum and the DVDSP forum for advice on how to use Compressor to encode and DVDSP to make your DVDs. You’ll get better, more specific advice if your questions are more specific.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear. Here’s what to do.

1) Export a Quicktime reference or self-contained movie from FCP in your edit codec (DV, DVCPro50, DVCProHD, etc.).

2) Drag that to Compressor and choose an H.264 preset there (I’m not sure why you chose HD DVD. Do not use that. It doesn’t exist anymore.). Tell Compressor what size (in the Geometry tab of the Inspector) the image should be (320×240, 256 x 144, etc.).

3) Choose the data rate (in Video Settings in the Encoder tab of the Inspector) to use (500kbps, 700 kbps, etc.).

4) Encode your file. This will produce the file you want.

5) Now, change the extension .mov on the file made above to .flv and you should be good.

“Unable to connect to background process…” may mean Compressor is broken. Hopefully when you do the above you won’t get this message. But, if you do, this may help.

If you don’t have the Production Premium suite from Adobe you can use Compressor. As explained by Nicole, export a reference or self-contained Quicktime movie of your program from FCP. Then drag that to Compressor and encode an H.264 file with the screen dimensions and data rate desired. Then, simply change the file’s extension from .mov to .flv. The last two versions of Flash Player have included the ability to play H.264 files. Just be sure to change the extension.
