Hybrids are great. We used a Gentner for many years until it finally gave up the ghost. When we went to the JK Broadcast Host (a hybrid) the crosstalk rejection was spectacular.

My sense is the JK box would be better than RadioShack, but I’ve used neither. Check out eBay for used units. An associate of mine picked up a very good JK box at a terrific price.

The viewer is showing you Quicktime. The Canvas is showing you the file using the codec setting of your timeline. So, if you’re editing in a DV timeline, the image will be degraded. If you’re editing in uncompressed or ProRes, it should look a lot better. But, you can’t judge an image in the Canvas. If you set its size to 100% you’ll get close. You should always use an external broadcast monitor to know what you have visually. If the final product is a file that’ll play on a computer or the web, take a short clip, export it, encode it to its final form and then look at that result in QT player (or whatever player represents how it will be seen). That will show you the result of your workflow.

Your import method sounds ok. Since the camera can record in XDCAM format, if you recorded that, your FCP would have a problem. If you recorded your media in the FCP QT format it should work. This is from JVC’s site:

“The GY-HM700 incorporates JVC’s Native File Recording technology that stores video in the ready-to-edit file format used by Apple’s Final Cut Pro™ non-linear editing system. The “.mov” files created in the camera can be easily dragged onto the NLE timeline without conversion or rewrapping, saving time while keeping the recorded material first generation. There is no need to use an intermediate codec.”

Look in the menu for where you select the recording format and make sure it’s not XDCAM.

What Dennis said. We have a big RAID named as the scratch drive. Each project has its own folder inside capture scratch and the 2 render folders. Every time you work in a project media goes where it’s supposed to go.

You can delete renders with the Render Manager in the Tools menu. Not sure about an audio cache.

Do the clips play even though they say media offline? If so, try trashing your thumbnail cache files.

Episode Pro is a fine encoder, but it costs. You already have Compressor. If you make an H.264 at the size and data rate you need with Compressor and then change the extension from .mov to .flv you’re done. Compressor can use all 8 cores of a Mac Pro and is very quick.
