  • Media Offline – Files will not reconnect

Posted by Mark Rodway on July 22, 2009 at 3:07 pm

I’ve just opened an old project that I haven’t touched for two days and a number of clips have gone offline (probably less than 10%). When I go in to reconnect the media, it is found and goes thru the process of reconnecting but remains… unconnected (one issue I have noted that when attempting to reconnect a single clip – occasionally two offline clips are registered – one with the correct file path and one with ” is missing). I have the same clips missing in various timelines – so I’m thinking some kind of file path corruption. I’ve checked the QTs, they seem fine, trashed preferences etc. but still the same deal. Looks like it’s reconnecting fine, but still showing Media Offline………

After some exploring, I discovered that my RAID 5 drive was degraded (no warning has come up as far as I have seen) – I have rebuilt it but still the same issue. I’ve also tried moving the media to another location and forcing it to relink there but to no avail. This made me think that it might be a project corruption issue – but looking back through (age) old autosaves and manual back ups the same files are affected in the same way.

Any ideas or advice would be gratefully received.

It seems similar to this issue https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1044540

Do the clips play even though they say media offline? If so, try trashing your thumbnail cache files.

No, its the clip in the timeline, not just the thumbnail – i.e. it plays red Media Offline in the Canvas window. If it was just the thumbnail, I wouldn’t be that bothered really.

    No takers?

I’ve discovered a workaround to fix the issue, and as I’m one for hating reading a post without a satisfactory conclusion I thought that I’d post it here.

As I mentioned earlier – one single file was giving two offline clips registered in the reconnect media window(one with the correct name and file path and one with ” is missing). What I found was that by skipping the ‘correct’ file and reconnecting the second one manually (i.e. it will be perceived as a different file name) then the file reconnects.

I also found that if you search for the first (correct file) and then don’t connect before skipping and reconnecting to the ” (blank) file then you don’t have to go searching for it – as it jumps straight to the last finder window that was opened – which was the correct one.

Hope this helps someone in dire straights somewhere else down the line.
