24P is subject to stuttering even if everything is done correctly. There’s a speed over which vertical edges will stutter. The American Cinematographer Handbook has specs for the maximum speed of a pan for a given frame rate. Go faster and it stutters. Try applying some blur to see if that helps. You can also try and slow down the move to see if that makes a difference.

I have a 761. There’s a card test you can run which delivers the read and write speeds of the card. The speed has to exceed a certain number for it to work reliably. See if you can run that test on your unit. Also, format the drive if you didn’t do that already. There may be some data on the card which is causing the problem.

Is there more than one FW device connected to the eSata? That might be a problem. On Macs even though there might be multiple FW ports they’re all run by one controller. When problems occur depends on the devices. I’ve seen this happen when I had my AJA IO connected to one FW port and a FW800 drive connected to another – the computer didn’t see the drive. However, with a different drive it worked. Go figure.

What are your audio/video settings?

What bit and sample rate are you using for the audio. If you lower the sample rate from, say 44100z to 22050, you in effect cut the high frequency response. It might eliminate the problem without affecting the audio too much. Just a thought.

Have you always plugged the FW into your drive? How is the drive connected to your computer? More details on your system would help folks help you. Have you changed anything since it worked last?

I’ve used Compressor a number of times to make ProRes files from Flip cams. They results were surprisingly good. Be sure to clearly name the clips as there will be matching times from clip to clip.

I’ve always used Compressor and have been happy with the results. However, why not test a short clip using both and see how they compare. Be sure to use the Ftame Controls in Compressor. Pick a fast-moving scene that will stress the encoder. Let us know what you find.
