  • Help! Unable to Print to Video

I know this has been brought up here before, but I’m at my wits end and can’t figure out how to solve this problem. I have a mini-DV deck that I use for capturing video, but when I need to Print to Video, it won’t record the sequence. The audio levels don’t even register during the tone test. The deck works fine as a capture device, but it doesn’t go the other way.

I have a DV/Firewire cable going from the deck into the computer’s external hard drive (there’s no Firewire input in the computer itself), but even when I take a camcorder and use that as the capture/print device, I get the same results. Something tells me that the FCP settings aren’t correct. Is there any particular way the A/V settings need to be adjusted for this operation? I’ve done Print to Video on this deck/computer setup before without any problems. Now, it’s not working and I have no idea why. This is bad because I’m getting a lot of requests for mini-DV tape dubs and I have no way to make it happen.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Have you always plugged the FW into your drive? How is the drive connected to your computer? More details on your system would help folks help you. Have you changed anything since it worked last?

I’ve had the computer set up this way from the very beginning – I run everything through a Lacie 1TB external drive, which is connected to the iMac through an eSATA port.

I got Print to Video to work once yesterday afternoon, but now it just prints audio, no video. I’m fairly convinced that it’s something to do with FCP settings, not hardware or connections. Can anyone run through the FCP A/V settings with me to make sure I’m doing this right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there more than one FW device connected to the eSata? That might be a problem. On Macs even though there might be multiple FW ports they’re all run by one controller. When problems occur depends on the devices. I’ve seen this happen when I had my AJA IO connected to one FW port and a FW800 drive connected to another – the computer didn’t see the drive. However, with a different drive it worked. Go figure.

    What are your audio/video settings?

    Hi Chris,
Look well in the desk menu and buttons. Sure there is a setup or a switch preventing the Print to Video.

I changed a couple of the settings in FCP and it seemed to do the trick:

In view/external video, I selected “single frame.”
In AV settings/AV devices, I unchecked “mirror on desktop” in playback output.

Now it works. Go figure. Thanks!

Chris – curious…which version of FCP are you running? I have the exact same infuriating problem and cannot get past it. Can load from tape just fine, it’s printing that I can’t do! I’m running 6…soon to upgrade to 7. thanks much.
