I’ve tried this. Listen to Zane. You don’t want to key on black. It’s big trouble.

I’m a bit anal about audio. I spend a lot of time “leveling” tracks. Since finding the Levelator, I’ve been letting it do the heavy lifting. It’s a terrific program. Donate if you can (I have no connection with Levelator).

March 2, 2010 at 3:44 pm in reply to: Best speakers for mixing

I’m a fan of Genelecs. Without a sub, any parts of your mix that contains low frequencies (music, explosions, etc.) will be off. How much extra time in a studio will you spend correcting the low end? How’s that cost compare to the cost of the sub?

I second the Loader recommendation. It’s a handy little program.

I’ve never used this, but made a note of it in case I ever needed a player like it. It’s similar to AppleTV. Check it out.

I’ve worked with Crew Connection. They’re good people. I’m sure they can answer your questions. For comparison there are other similar companies such as Crews Control.

February 28, 2010 at 10:36 pm in reply to: MPEG Streamclip HDV to MP4

Encoding programs like Sorenson Squeeze or Episodes cost nearly as much as FCS. With FCS you get editing, compositing, encoding and high-end color grading. It’d be a good move to start saving for FCS.

I believe MPEG Streamclip can convert avi to QT in FCP-friendly formats.

February 28, 2010 at 9:45 pm in reply to: Timecode Breaks

I can’t advise on the time breaks as I’ve never captured that way. However, whatever you do to help your situation, most likely, you won’t be able to reliably recapture the footage in the future. So, be sure to archive all your data when you’ve finished your project in case you need revisit it later.

February 28, 2010 at 9:30 pm in reply to: Matching Footage from HVX200 with Canon HV30

Shoot some tests and see for yourself. Also, testing a workflow like this first might help you avoid trouble after the shoot. Make sure to shoot with the same frame rate on both cameras. You can try different scene files on the HVX and see which ones match best with the HV30. Don’t wait until after your shoot to figure this stuff out.
