I’m not familiar with Premiere’s workflow, but with Final cut you should make a folder for each card you transfer, then copy the Contents folder and the Lastclip file into that folder. I don’t know the HVX well and have always off-loaded P2 cards with a Duel Adaptor and MacBook Pro, but the cable will have standard USB ends. Perhaps a-type on one end and b-type at the other. Just check the manual, it’s there.

Don’t drape yourself with the blankets. Drape them in front of walls. The width of parallel walls determine the frequency at which you hear a sonic “hump” that causes the “hollowness.” It’s what happens while singing in the shower. At certain frequencies your voice suddenly resonates. It might sound great in the shower, but usually is a problem while recording. The blankets act to reduce wall reflections that cause the problem.

If you look into recording studio acoustics a bit and examine floor plans you’ll see no parallel surfaces. The rooms are usually trapezoidal in shape and the ceiling tilts in relation to the floor. Of course, that’s just the beginning of how studio acoustics are designed. But, as the mic will be very close to your mouth, and any reflections consequently lower in gain, the room acoustics will be less of a problem. Just listen after recording some tests. Let your ears be your guide.

If you create a new sequence, then drag your AFX file to it, FCP should ask if you want the seq to match those of the file. But, I’m not sure how much FCP likes the Animation codec in terms of RT performance, so that might not be a great idea. What’s the format of your final file after you export from FCP and use Compressor? That might dictate what Compressor setting to use in your edit sequence.

The animation codec gives you an alpha channel, so if you need that and you’re placing that file over another video track, it might have been better to use ProRes4444 which has an alpha and FCP is more likely to play it in RT.

Try setting the Canvas to 100% and see how it looks. While I use a broadcast monitor, I don’t recall text all of a sudden looking bad after upgrading to FCS3. I always use Boris 3D for text, though. Maybe that would help, too.

I’m with Russell. More cores and memory is best. Your Octo might well outperform the Quad. While FCP doesn’t use all the cores, if you search the Cow you can find how to create a virtual cluster to speed up Compressor. That can result in a large speed enhancement while encoding. Also, if you can spring for the ATI 4870 it’ll be worth it as it will speed up Motion and give better performance with certain FXPlugs.

If you can get your hands on the camera that shot the footage you may have better luck. Particularly with a well-used camera, the heads can be worn and/or starting to be out of alignment. Same is true of a deck. Maybe that’s happening. At the least try a different deck or camera and see what happens.

I’ve never used FCE, but if it’s like FCP you should have an anamorphic (or widescreen or 16:9)button in Sequence Settings. With your sequence open go to the Sequence menu and choose Settings. If the anamorphic button is there check it. Hopefully that will turn the sequence into a 16:9 size. If FCE is like FCP, when you drag the first clip into a new sequence FCE asks you if you want the sequence to adopt the settings of that clip. If it’s a 16:9 clip the sequence will be setup that way as well as matching the frame rate and other parameters of the clip.
