I am so confused. I’ve been using FCP for several years now and just upgraded to FCP 7.

NEVER before have I had such problems with text. I have used the built in text tool a thousand times and it always looks FINE. But now, no matter what my sequence settings are, the text looks blocky and pixelated and gross!

So I tried building some text in PSD and bringing it over and IT LOOKS TERRIBLE. Pixelated, blocky, just wrong.

What am I doing wrong? Are there some new weird settings in FCP 7 that I am missing?

Nothing I have tried has worked. I’ve searched online for solutions and tried rendering and exporting and it still looks terrible. How do I get clean, clear, crisp text like I used to? What has changed?

Thanks in advance for any help!

p.s. I’ve seen in a lot of posts that people are saying you have to view your work on an NTSC monitor. All the editing I’ve ever done has been on computer screens and I often work while I’m on the road using my laptop as my only computer. So atm another monitor is not an option. I’ve never had issues before working on computer monitors so I don’t understand why I’m having issues now.

Try setting the Canvas to 100% and see how it looks. While I use a broadcast monitor, I don’t recall text all of a sudden looking bad after upgrading to FCS3. I always use Boris 3D for text, though. Maybe that would help, too.

Nothing changed for me going to FCS3. I mostly work in ProRes 1920 x 1080 timelines. I use Boris for rolling credits but often use the FCP title tools for simple supers & subtitles without any grief.

I always monitor externally but also haven’t noticed anything different on the computer screens.

Are your RT playback settings wrong? Is the canvas an awkward size (below 100%)? Are you using high quality scrubbing?

The Canvas WILL NOT give you full quality playback, and you will find that gfx played back on a proper monitor will look a lot smoother – whatever your experience has been before.

Are your RT playback settings wrong?

    Nope.

Is the canvas an awkward size (below 100%)?

Nope. When it was at 50% I raised it to 100% to see if that helped Did not.

Are you using high quality scrubbing?

    Yes.

The Canvas WILL NOT give you full quality playback, and you will find that gfx played back on a proper monitor will look a lot smoother – whatever your experience has been before.

I’m aware that the Canvas won’t give me full quality but the quality its giving me now is HORRIBLE compared to what I’ve been used to for four years.

    What is WEIRD is this:
I opened another project that had the same sequence settings as the project that is giving me trouble. I copied the elements out of the trouble project and pasted into a sequence of the other project AND IT LOOKED TOTALLY NORMAL.

    Huh?

Is it possible for a project or sequence to become corrupted? All of the sequence settings for both projects were the same but in the Bad Project, the text was almost unreadable due to pixelation in the canvas, and in the Other Project, it looked perfectly normal and readable and what I expected.

Insanely weird but at least I got the text issue solved temporarily for this project. :-/

[ashley marie] “s it possible for a project or sequence to become corrupted?”

    Yes yes yes.

If trashing prefs, restarting, disk utility all don’t work, copy and paste your timline into a new project.
If it’s fine in the new project then something went corrupt in your old one.
