  • Dissolve In or Out from Empty track to Video in Fullscreen

Just curious as to why sometimes FCP doesn’t read a Cross Dissolve in Fullscreen as a fade up or down when its placed on an empty track and “fading” either into or out of an image? Also curious why some dissolves cause a one or two frame jitter or jump (even when fully rendered) in the Timeline and Fullscreen. Both of these issues seem to be intermittent but possibly linked linked to the “All Frames” setting when using Digital Cinema Desktop Preview. Any thoughts?

I always use the pen-tool and opacity when fading in from empty tracks. I’ve occasionally seen what you’re describing in the crossfade/dissolve presets–sometimes it was related to mixed format footage (and depending on the timeline settings the fade could be strained). Sometimes I’ve just thought it was a glitch. Anyway, try setting your fade using the opacity w/keyframes. It’s worked for me.

That dissolve “bump” is often caused by the dissolve not being fully rendered. Checkout this post by David Roth Weiss.

Your right. I’ve become so accustomed to dropping them in via the default keys that I forget I can resolve the issue with a manual fade just as easily and minus any side effects. Thanks Josh.
